- Ulysses Everett McGill
Here's my premise (and I'll admit from the outset that I could be wrong):
I think that the present conflict should be called World War III. And even if it isn't called WWIII by the press, and by historians, but I just decided that's how I should think of it.
I don't know what the criteria ought to be when deciding if a conflict is a "World War" or not. But many of the world's major countries are involved, and the fighting/killing is taking place on almost every continent.
The United States says that this is a war that will be fought on many fronts and in many theaters all over the world. There are many countries allied with us.
And one of our enemies says it's a world wide war.
Al-Qaida's No. 2 leader issued a worldwide call Thursday for Muslims to rise up in a holy war against Israel and join the fighting in Lebanon and Gaza until Islam reigns from "Spain to Iraq." He said that al-Qaida now views "all the world as a battlefield open in front of us."
The "War on Terror" and the terrorists war on the world has affected nearly every country in the world. On some level everyone is involved. It's Axis V. Allies all over again. And even those groups that aren't explictly tied (like Hezbollah and Al Queda) share the same goals: destruction of Israel, America and the Western world. This is much like the understanding shared between Japan and Germany in WWII.
Why not call it World War III?
One of the things that makes it difficult is that the enemy hasn't typically been a single country or alliance of countries like in previous world wars. It's also hard to pinpoint a beginning point, and it may be even tougher to pinpoint an end. There will be no treaty or surrender. There will be no VT(Victory against Terrorists) day. This is a different kind of war, with a different kind of enemy, but it is still a war.
Also, I think the media and the public (myself included) has been reluctant to call it World War III because we always figured that the the third world war would be nuclear. In fact the term "World War III" has often been used in the movies as a euphemism for nuclear war. So because this current conflict, though it has been called a war by both sides, and though both sides claim that it is worldwide, isn't nuclear, it has managed to avoid the label thus far. (Of course, the only reason this war isn't nuclear is because the other side doesn't have nukes yet.)
The first step to a cure is admitting there is a disease.
We are in a World War folks. And it's the third one. I think it's time we wake up to reality. Denial ain't just a river in a terrorist spawning country.

Coming Soon-WW III-from the People Who Brought You Iraq
They never cease to amaze. The same people who have us in a mess in Iraq want to solve the problem they created by having more of our troops fighting a wider war throughout the Middle East and Iran.
Who is telling us this is WW III, and by implication, trying to justify a wider conflict to include Syria and Iran? The same geniuses who helped get us into Iraq. Newt Gingrich, William Kristol, Sean (high school) Hannity, Oliver North, William (the virtuous gambler) Bennett, Bill O'Reilly, Charles Krauthammer and Fred Barnes. Not one day of military service out of the whole group.
I guess they figure that if they can't win a smaller war they can win a larger one, though I fail to see how that follows. Do not expect even the U.K. to be around for the next misadventure the neocons want to undertake. Once Tony Blair is gone his successor has the perfect opportunity to get out of a bad situation and I think he'll take it.
Instead of figuring out a diplomatic way to get us out of the Middle East, these yo-yo's keep trying to find a military victory somewhere, anywhere, as an excuse for their strategic ineptitude.
The people are saying in poll after poll, "Get out", and the neocons are promising to drag them further into the Middle East quagmire.
This latest attempt won't work to scare the American people into voting Republican in November. Just the opposite, it will scare them into getting rid of their Republican representatives so that don't have to send even more troops to the Middle East and stay even longer.
Look in your Bible. There are many references to Tyre being decimated. In fact, do you know who the king of Tyre is ???? That would be Satan, the devil himself. Read Ezekiel chapter 28. God is giving us a message; this in fact could be prophecy fulfilled. The great break in the world system of a war without end is in the beginning stages(world war III). Read the book of Revelation chapter 13 which describes the political beast receiving a wound. A break in world peace (world war III as we would and should call it). It's only gonna get more ugly in my opinion(the "war on terror" or world war III). The old testament and New is filled with prophecy that will be fulfilled in regards to the nations being at war. Luke 21, Matthew 24, and Mark 13 relay that there will be wars and rumours of wars..............you decide.

I'm well late in commenting but just had to say I have thought the same thing for some time - it is a world war and I've wondered why we don;t call it WWW3. I'm in NZ and even here we know there's a world war on - we're involved in it too.

I would be very wary of letting Al-Qaeda choose the name for what's happening--why should they get to set the terms? They will naturally choose terms that favor their own interests and disfavor ours.
I think the fact that Al-Qaeda's second-in-command wants the world to see a "global war" between a unified Islam (hah!) and a two-headed Israel-U.S. enemy is good reason for being suspicious of such a mindset.
