"The most important aspect of Christianity is not the work we do, but the relationship we maintain and the surrounding influence and qualities produced by that relationship. That is all God asks us to give our attention to, and it is the one thing that is continually under attack. "

- Oswald Chambers, My Utmost For His Highest
Arminian "Heresy"

I was perusing Amazon, looking up some information on Adam Clarke's Bible commentary, when I read this customer review:

Clarke is an Arminian, that is he denies the doctrines of protestant reformed theology as taught by Luther, Calvin and all the great names of the protestant reformation. As such, I can't recommend this biased work to the church.

Am I then to assume that the guy who wrote the review isn't biased?

Anyway, while this guy didn't go so far as to call Arminians (or, Armenians, as some folks out there like to refer to them) heretics, it's obvious that he thinks they're at least heterodox.

Then you've got the other side of the coin, the Arminians who think Calvinism (along with eternal security, etc.) is damnable heresy.

Puh-lease.

Yeah, there's weirdos out there. On both sides and in countless sides between.

Maybe we should ignore them? :-)

I guess I should have known better than to expect serious commentary on this post . . . :)

Incidentally, blest, how do you know when you're baroque?

. . . When you're out of Monet.

10. Scott - 09/15/2007 10:06 pm CDT

I can't Handel all these puns.

11. The Ancient Mariner - 09/15/2007 10:09 pm CDT

In that case, Scott, I'd suggest you go into Haydn.

12. Roy - 09/15/2007 10:29 pm CDT

All this punishment...music to my eyes

This comments thread should be rated R for violins.

Hey, at least there's no nudity. . . .

On another note, do you know the definition of a major second?

. . . Two oboes playing in unison.

(As a double-reed player myself, I'm allowed to say that.)

15. Bird - 09/16/2007 11:11 am CDT

This is all too darn funny. ;-)

And they said nothing good could come out of the Calvinist/Arminian debates....

17. The Ancient Mariner - 09/16/2007 7:53 pm CDT

Well, as unfriendly as that debate can get, bringing good humor to it is surely the Liszt we can do . . .

18. De - 09/16/2007 8:09 pm CDT

Definitely

This discussion tends to bring out people's bassist emotions.

19. Alan - 09/16/2007 9:51 pm CDT

You're right, De. I have to confess that just reading the comments here makes me treble with rage.

20. The Ancient Mariner - 09/17/2007 8:39 am CDT

You'd best be careful, Alan--a line like that could get you thrown in the punitentiary.

21. Alan - 09/17/2007 9:50 am CDT

Would they still send me there if can prove I'm chemically imbalanced?

I'm not a frayed, although if I'm going to be doing some hard time, I'd better tie up a few loose ends first.

22. The Ancient Mariner - 09/17/2007 1:09 pm CDT

That would probably depend on the tenor of your defense.

23. Alan - 09/17/2007 3:25 pm CDT

My first line of defense is that I have no motif.

24. The Ancient Mariner - 09/18/2007 10:26 am CDT

Alan, if that's the best you can do, the Spector of punishment becomes very real . . .
