Trekkies Bash New Star Trek Film As 'Fun, Watchable'

I purposefully used the word "trekkie," knowing it would out all the nerds who couldn't help but correct it. :-)
And the only Trek-Americans on this blog, as far as I know, are Bird and Shrode.
(Shrode even had the commemorative Star Trek dinner plates, which made me reevaluate MY relationship to this blog.)
Speaking of Star Track . . . man, that Jar Jar Binks character sure was irritating. . .
Look there are two kinds of people in this world:
Those who know how to do the Vulcan death grip, and those who don't.
I'll leave each of you to decide which you are.
OK, now to the subject actually at hand...
This was a hilarious video. They nailed it. Even as they stuck it to me again, and again, I laughed. They were right on.
This was really funny.
So finally, a Star Trek movie Jared can go see. :)
Keep going back and forth on this movie.
I love Star Trek, and when I heard Lost creator JJ Abrams was set to make the new movie, was really looking forward to it. Then I saw one of the early trailers and lost nearly all interest. But then with all the initial favorable reviews, I regained some hope. And now with the latest tv advertisement/trailer running with the evil commander screaming 'Fire everything!', I am back in.
It might not end up being The Wrath of Khan, but then what it? And after all, the worst Trek is still better than Star Wars.
Back in the day, some Trekkie friends told me to watch "Kahn" because it was the best movie and would get me hooked.
Couldn't get through it.
So if I couldn't get through the best Trek movie, the other ones must REALLY suck.
I realize it is difficult for some to get through works of immense historic genius like Khan. Such brilliance is not for the faint of heart.
;)
P.S. I'm glad you never tried to watch ST5-That Which Must Not Be Named. I may have had to concede some suckage on par with Star Wars with that one.
Unfortunate news flash for Jared . . .
Star Wars 4 and 5 (the original and sequel) are historic, great movies.
Star Wars 6 was . . . adequate. The Ewoks betrayed G Lucas's penchant for wanting to sell expensive plush toys.
Flash forward 20 years. 20 years to brush up the story he supposedly had already written in the 70s. 20 years to find the best writers, best actors, best plots. He had all the resources in the world. And we got . . .
A big eared Jamaican alien stepping in poop.
Episode 1 was tolerable. Barely
Episode 2 was like sand in one's underwear. It's gritty and irritating, not smooth like Princess Amidala's skin.
Episode 3 made me wish I could endure something less painful, such as being burned alive on a planet made of lava.
The good done by Episode 4 and 5 will live on. But the Star Wars legacy itself is buried in a burning mountain of cr@ptasticity.
Evan remains, as always, the Correct One.
I'm not banging down the theater door to watch this film, though I am a Trek-head.
Jared, I believe you are hardened. There's nothing you can do about it; the choice was not yours. In the trek world, you're a vessel of destruction. Sorry, dude.
This is one movie I'd really like to see in the theater, but I'm going to have to wait for the DVD.
Yes, I'm a trekker.
Bird's assessment of Jared seems spot on, almost enough to make me turn Calvinist. I mean, I can understand not being converted by "Khan", but not even able to get through it? Man, something is seriously wrong here.
"that Hollywood hack who started the original series back in the forties or something"
Ouch! But still hilarious. The first time in my life that I ever felt old was watching "Khan" and two little kids were in front of me. The Enterprise was duking it out with the Reliant, under Khan's control, and one of the little wheezers turns to the other and says, "Hey, I figured out how to tell the good guys form the bad guys." sigh.
And, for what it's worth, I myself think "The Undiscovered Country" barely edges out "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNN" as the best Star Trek movie ever.
The new film ranks at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and the clip they showed during last week's LOST was enough to seal the deal for me. This weekend, it's IMAX time. I'm not a huge Trek fan, but I'm familiar with all of the characters and their particular roles. I've also never seen a Trek film (although I have seen the end of one of the films in which Spock dies - don't they bury him in the water, or something?).
I really believe that this movie is going to show strong in both its first AND second weekend, if it is as good as advertised. The question is whether or not it will beat out Angels & Demons which releases in Trek's second weekend. I think it will - pretty devastating for Hanks, Opie and Co. if that happens. (We'll wait and see, I suppose)
I saw Wolverine this past Saturday, and it already feels like old news. I think that this film will be pretty big - I'm looking forward to it.
BTW - stop hating on Star Wars. Ep 3 was a very good film and Ep 2 wasn't craptastic. Ep 1 was a tad rusty, though.
Whysa yousa hater?
One of my favorite parts of the clip was the teaser for the next news story about the single-teared elderly woman following Obama.
(Shrode even had the commemorative Star Trek dinner plates, which made me reevaluate MY relationship to this blog.)
Ha! I've seen those plates in person!!! I'm convinced that I will be asked to watch the boys the release night so that my dear BiL (Shrode) and his lovely, understanding wife can make it to the premiere.
Although I'm personally not a "trekker" or "trekkie" or whatever, I must admit I've seen one of them in the theatre. I have no idea which one. Apparently it left a huge mark me...
I can't, however, talk too much trash. My dad is a trekker/trekkie... :)
BTW: trekker/trekkie or not, I might want to see this one, but I agree with jen, when it comes out on DVD! :)
Jared, "The Wrath of Kahn" was the best of the "orginal with Shatner and co..."
But now the best Star Trek is "First Contact" with the next generation crew. Try that one. :)
Or maybe you should just wait for next weekend.
Quaid,
There's no accounting for taste. I could list you chapter and verse what's wrong with all three prequels (they got progressively worse, imo) from a plot, consistency, acting, directing point of view, but you'd probably trounce me ;-) - Rotten Tomatoes liked it too.
I thought it was wretched. Maybe I just have a low tolerance for movies where there's more CGI than real stuff. Plus, I was ruined by watching LOTR during this same time.

Bob, you are absolutely right!

I thought Ep 1 was good, but 2 and 3 were lame. The originals are much better -- sans the Ewoks.

For what it's worth, in Lucas's original conception, the final battle royale was to take place on the home planet of the Wookies. That would have been so cool, watching Wookies rip storm troopers arms out of their sockets. But, I think, by the time he was ready to make Ep. 7, Lucas's mind was totally controlled by the marketing virus and he figured he could sell alot more stuffed teddy bears than yetis. So he changed the Wook-Ees to E-Woks (so drained of creativity that he couldn't even be bothered to come up with a new name), and gave us something Disney could have produced, and probably should have.
I cannot be compelled to check out Star Dreck.
Maybe I'll watch the new one on TV some day.
Like Quaid, I thought Episode 3 (the third prequel) was pretty good.
Episodes 1 and 2 sucked, though.
I liked all three originals, including the Ewok-laden "Jedi."
Star Wars Ep IV = Groundbreaking classic.
Star Wars Ep V = Great.
Star Wars Ep VI = Significant dropoff from V but at least concludes a classic trilogy without completely ruining it.
Star Wars Ep's I, II and III are all so painfully terrible that any distinction between or among them is meaningless.
I could never get into Star Trek. Nanu, nanu.
Some questions about terminology:
Is "Trekker/Trekkie" like "Emerging/Emergent"? Which one is heretical? Does Rodenbury's endorsement of the "Trekkie" title come into play?
I don't know which is worse me reading all of this or me wanting to see those plates Shrode has.
The boy and I laughed hard watching the video

It's more like Nerding/Nerdent.
I mean, seriously - set phasers to Dork.
I've always considered myself a Trek enthusiast, not a Trekkie. I'm mainly an original series guy (both TV shows and movies). The Next Gen is ok, but all the other spin-offs haven't ever captured my attention. I even Netflixed Disc 1 of Deep Space Nine and thought it was so-so.

No intelligent life here, Scotty. Beam me up.

Yes, Bird! I thought I was the last one! That's what this blog needs: a post on what the best Star Trek series was. And then we can all discuss and flame about it and it'll get way more comments than these stupid posts about the Houston Rockets have been getting. Let's see it, dude.
Yeah, I know, I'm late to the party. I don't care who you are, that video is FUNNY! I guess I will be counted among those that are original show fans. I've not cared much for the latest movies starting with the one about Spock's brother who is supposedly Satan. They impress me as juggernauts that collapse under their own weight for lack of content. I will be seeing this Saturday morning with friends and family. I also should say that I already have problems with trailers I've seen. They seem to contradict Star Trek canon.
As for Star Wars, pretty much what Bill (The Jewel) said. Four and five rocked. I wanted to kill the Ewoks, I had and have no use for them. Although their fighting fury was awesome!

I was laughing so hard at this, tears came... yes, actual tears, pouring out of my eyes.
Can't wait to hear the "great debate" as to whether the movie lives up to the hype next week!

Quoth Jonah Goldberg: "think, roughly, Shia vs. Sunni"
Bird and Shrode and all you other Trekkies [sic] out there
I naturally assumed everyone on this blog was a Trekker. I must re-evaluate my relationship to this blog.
