Anyone Paying For Anything Out There?

I just noticed an annual subscription to the online Oxford English Dictionary is a hefty $295.

So here's my question, besides domain names, do any of you guys out there subscribe to any online service that you have to pay for? If so, how much are you paying for it and what benefit is it to you?

Just curious.

Does paying SixApart for my blogs count?

I subscribe to GlennBeck.com as an Insider because his show is no longer on any radio station in our region (which is crazy because his show is #3 nationally and we're a large market). I think it's $36 for 6 months and I can listen to his show online or download his show .mp3 files to listen to as I want.

I pay to protect my computer but I'm looking for a free one now.

Well I get access to a lot of online libraries for the cost of whatever college is. A lot of money. I use them all the time, though.

Milly, are you talking about anti-virus? I use AVG Free. As far as I know, it's good.

I pay for the Webster Unabridged on-line and I love it for about $30.00 a year. I also subscribe to the Dennis Miller Radio show for about $5.00 a month. Worth it to me since I download the MP3 files and listen at my leisure.

I also subscribe to magazine on line editions because I can't stand having them pile up and figuring out how to file them. Plus it saves trees as part of my untiring devotion to the endless struggle against global warming. We must not flag in our glorious endeavor.

used to pay for pogo.com membership... because my mom spends way too much time on there in the member only areas and going in there is sometimes the only way to get her attention to ask her something. but i've let it expire the past two years and she's renewed it for me, so i don't even remember how much it is... and its rarely used.

the one i pay for is michaelwsmith.com, which is about 40 a year unless i catch it to renew when they are running a discount. main thing to me is the community of people in the friends online area... but it also gives a merch package of shirt, mousepad, and backpack etc... and means presales and usually awesome seats to most of his concerts, occasional meet and greets and online chats, early info most of the time, and that sort of thing.

I subscribe to Ancestry.com and it runs $29.95 a month. That's a lot, but the tools are pretty good and the records are unbeatable. I mean, where else could I find my great-grandfather's draft card? It's extremely addictive actually. Also, it's a community in that if you have a branch of your tree that crosses with someone else's, you can import their tree to complete your own. I had no idea that I came from the Mayflower descendants until I tracked my paternal ancestors back to one of the many Mayflower branches, and the rest was new-found history.

Do Webkinz count?

Gretchen, do you pay for Webkinz?

I don't pay for jack online. It's the information age, and I think it's lame that Internet costs money. :-)
I like the pushes in some cities to provide area-wide wifi.

My girls use Webkinz, Precious Girls Club, Playhouse Disney, PBS Kids, and my wife plays games on Pogo, but it's all free stuff.

I also pay for the premium level on Flickr, but I consider that a business expense since it's where I post photos of my jewelry. I look at it as a form of advertising. I also have an account with Endicia.com, which is an online shipping service that offers a bit more than USPS.com for international shipping - also a business expense.

I pay for a subscription to MLB.TV on mlb.com. It lets you watch all the out-of-market major league baseball games (except national blackouts) on your PC at pretty good resolution (1.2mb). Since I don't live in the market area of my favorite team anymore, it lets me watch all their games for a very reasonable price.

If I remember correctly, a subscription for the entire season is about $90. Or you can do it month by month for about $20 per month.

You can purchase essentially the same package for your television though most cable companies called Extra Innings, but their price is more than double that of MLB.TV, and they don't offer the month to month option.

Jared---you pay for Webkinz in a very roundabout way.

You buy the stuffed animal, which comes with an access code to their website. You can only visit the site if you have purchased the animal. The catch is that it expires after a year, leaving you without your account UNLESS you buy a new Webkinz.

Then you get another year of access.

I pay approx $140/yr for web hosting(not the same as domain names) and can host up to 5 domains with the package I have. I also pay $20/yr for e-mail. I've been burned on free accounts before and am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. I don't care how much free space G-Mail offers me.

I consider these online things my "hobby". I don't play golf, fish, or hunt so I think it's a good deal all in all.

I pay about $55/year for hosting and about $20 per year for domain names (I registered both salgUOd.net and salgOUd.net 'cause people can't spell. :-D). My wife pays for Pogo, but she really enjoys it and chats with her Mom a lot.

I use free anti virus & firewall called Comodo. I just dropped AVG because I got tired of it never doing automatic updates and I dropped Zone Alarm firewall because it was locking up my wife's PC. The guy at geekstogo.com recommended Comodo and I like it so far.
