cool, I think Cheadle will upgrade this character......Iron Man was A LOT of fun - looking forward to more.

2. Jared - 10/14/2008 10:54 am CDT

Yeah. I think Cheadle may be the best actor in movies right now. I think he's incredible.

3. Crossbow - 10/14/2008 11:00 am CDT

Is there some kind of humor I am missing in the title of this post? They are both really talented, but they look nothing alike. They are just the same ethnicity. Is that an attempt to poke fun at people that think all black people look alike maybe?

4. Jeff Creecy - 10/14/2008 11:08 am CDT

I agree with Crossbow. I am very offended by the racist post title.
How about another post: All black people like Fried Chicken and watermellon.

5. Andrew - 10/14/2008 11:25 am CDT

I'm pretty sure the title was tongue-in-cheek.

6. Jared - 10/14/2008 11:44 am CDT

There is a question mark at the end of the post title.

It's a, yes, tongue in cheek way of indicating Hollywood probably sees Terence Howard and Don Cheadle interchangeably.

I know they don't look alike.

Funny story:

One of our Element guys, who is black, was in the hospital all last week b/c of congestive heart failure. I spent quite a bit of time with him, and I was in there when a nurse was trying to figure out what he wanted to eat (b/c it must be low sodium, etc.)
She finally said she'd bring him a fruit plate.

As she's walking out, he stops her and says, "oh, if you're bringing a fruit plate, I don't eat bananas."

You should have seen that nurse's face. Now, you should know, that he is a huge cut-up and had been giving the nurses a hard time about all kinds of things since he'd been there. So I could see the wheels turning in her mind, like: is he joking? what do I make of this?

And then he goes, "I'm allergic." (which he is)

"Oh," she says. "Okay." Then she starts to leave.

He stops her again. "Oh! Also."

"Yes," she says.

"No watermelon either."

The look on her face was priceless. And I could see him starting to snicker.

But he is actually allergic to both bananas and watermelon, so it's both true and a fun thing to mess with white people about.

(And now I will be called a racist for telling that story. :-)

I really like Howard, so it will be sad to see him go - I'm not usually for changes in actor for a recurring role, but it's not like they got some newbie as his replacement. Cheadle is pretty awesome, so I don't think too much will be lost.

It seemed pretty clear to me that it was a tongue-in-cheek comment on Hollywood (if there's racism here, it would belong to the studio execs; how it would be racist to comment on that, I'm not sure), so the reaction strikes me as odd.

On a more important matter: I'm with Jared on Cheadle. I really thought he should have gotten the Oscar for Hotel Rwanda--not only was he that good, but since he seemed to have been established in the mind of the studios as a supporting actor, I cynically didn't believe he'd be likely to get another shot at an Oscar-worthy leading role. Granted, this is another supporting role, but by its nature, it might indicate otherwise. I hope so.

Oh silly me, stupid commenter. Where would we be without you super-smart Thinkings to guide our paths? I keep ignoring those pesky punctuation-mark thingys. Putting a question mark there so obviously connects it with Hollywood - how could I have missed that? Hollywood people are so questionable, put a question mark on a statement to let people know that is who you are talking about. How could I have been so stupid to miss that? Or to even understand what such a complicated grammatical concept like a question mark means? I should stop coming here - I am obviously way out of my league....

11. Jared - 10/14/2008 12:29 pm CDT

Crossbow, why are you always humorless? Why do you always have a chip on your shoulder over here? Why do you always seem to take exception to everything?

I'm cool if you think that title makes me a racist. I don't care.

If you stop commenting here, we'd probably both be better off.
Peace

LOL...Crossbow, that cracked me up.
Oh, and Jared, I got a kick out of your story, as well.
And it's all good...like I told Crossbow earlier, just because I'm black, people mistake me for Denzel Washington all the time! And, Black people like fried chicken and watermelon...so what? Messicans like refried beans and tacos. White people like mac and cheese, mayonaise sandwhiches, and John Denver. Big deal.

13. nhe - 10/14/2008 12:44 pm CDT

blek.......I hate mayonnaise, however, you nailed me on the other two..........one thought on Cheadle in Iron Man - the article said the character would have an "expanded role"......Cheadle and Downey Jr. are both prone to scene stealing (in a good way) - do we have the makings of a poor man's "De Niro and Pacino in Heat" thing possibly here?

14. Bird - 10/14/2008 12:48 pm CDT

Creecy looks just like Denzel Washington in Man On Fire. Coincidentally, Denzel's character's name was "Creecy" in that movie. Hmm ...

15. Jeff Creecy - 10/14/2008 12:59 pm CDT

Exactly! It' WASN'T Denzel playing that role. It was me! But he got all the money! It ain't right. I got scammed! Incidently, did you know that that role was first offered to Cheadle, but he turned it down?
Ok, I made that part up.

16. Jeff Creecy - 10/14/2008 1:00 pm CDT

Oh, and nhe, I love that idea! Of Cheadle and Downey Jr becoming the next De Niro and Pacino! Bring on the scripts!!

17. The Ancient Mariner - 10/14/2008 2:55 pm CDT

If Downey can stay clean, anyway.

18. Sharpton - 10/14/2008 3:40 pm CDT

Well, considering that the next movie's supposed to deal with Tony Stark's alcoholism...Ok, yeah, that was a bit of a joke there. (Though, did anyone notice how many drinks Tony knocked back in the first film? Lots, man.)
I think this will end up being good. Howard was good, yes, but I think Cheadle will be better. I think/hope he can give us a character who just "feels" stronger, as it were. Maybe part of it was that I didn't like Howard's voice as much for the character. Nothing wrong with it or him in general, but it didn't have quite the authority I imagined Rhodey having. I suppose we'll just have to see.

19. Doug - 10/14/2008 5:07 pm CDT

Yeah, in the cartoons I watched as a kid, War Machine's voice was almost in James Earl Jones territory. Agreed that there's nothing wrong with Howard, but it was kind of an adjustment for me.

While I initially scratched my head at the title of the post, I think it'd be a good idea to give someone like Jared the benefit of the doubt, i.e. ask a question like "What did you mean by that?" before pulling out the big guns and shouting racism. Especially when his take was that Cheadle's presence makes Iron Man "awesomer." He's never given me any reason to believe he's racist, you know? Just my two cents.
