"People have fallen into a foolish habit of speaking of orthodoxy as something heavy, humdrum, and safe. There never was anything so perilous or so exciting as orthodoxy."

- G.K. Chesterton
Calling All Shameless Plugs

I will soon be redesigning our church's website and I'm looking for inspiration. Consider this a challenge for you to impress me with the wonderment that is your church website! Or if you like the site of a church that you've never set foot in, that'll work too. I will also accept suggestions about what you would like to see in a church website (yes, I'm covering all my bases).

Go check out Heal Your Church Website for lots of ideas on what not to do, and some guidance on what to do. He's a big fan of using a Content Management System like B2, Moveable Type or Wordpress to manage a church website.

Check out this post which I thought really brought out some powerful ideas of what a church web site could be.

Some good resources too, like his email obfuscator.

NOTE: The links are good, but at this moment HYCW seems to be down. Check back later.

I was comin' here to recommend you checking out HYCW too, but salguod beat me to it. Anyhoo -- I second salguod.

I DON'T recommend my church's website, which looks fantastic but can be frustrating to navigate through. Finding simple things like what worship albums are available from the church choir are nearly impossible, and one time I couldn't even find what time a certain upcoming event started.

Form and function need to be firing on all cylinders. I've seen websites that work great and are easy to find whatever I want but that otherwise look like crap. And I've seen websites that look stylish and sleek and hip and just generally awesome that are otherwise heck to surf through.

Slightly off topic - I just took a gander at HYCW - the post about McLean Bible is hilarious to me as one who lives in the MBC area. We call it Willow East (at least I do). That they have that non-Flash page is a little disconcerting, to say the least and I appreciate MeanDean's rebuke.

Our church's site is here. I built it and my wife maintains it. We've had several people find the church through the site.

Our priest also maintains a blog and we have a tsunami relief blog as well.

sounds a little "fluffy" (just put the accent on the "son"...but I like the church and the youth group has been good for my kids.

OK, 2 of my 3 links were good. Try this link for the HYCW home page.

The North American branch of my denomination has a monthly "eChurch" award for outstanding church websites. You can find links to the winning churches here.

(My church won last year in June.

Two more for you to look at:

My sister/bil's church - this link is to the redo that my bil is working on. As such, the actual links don't work yet.

One that someone recommended for you at my blog, although I'm not familiar with the church at all.

bil - brother-in-law. I'm a lazy typist.
