I'm going off the internet for the rest of the week, but before I do, I just had to say that Cloverfield is face-meltingly awesome. If you have any inclination to do so, go see it.
If I may put on my film analyst hat for a second, I would say that what Godzilla and Them! (etc.) were to post-Hiroshima Cold War paranoia, Cloverfield is to post-9/11 War on Terror paranoia.
But putting my fanboy beanie back on, it just rocked.

I saw it and have to say it was the worst movie experience I ever had. Of course, that has nothing to do with if it was a good movie or not. I have no idea if it was because I had to keep my eyes closed during the last half or so. Not because it was scary or intense, but because I was about to throw up from motion sicknesses. Seriously! I have been on some pretty intense boat rides and airplane trips that I was fine on - I usually don't suffer from motion sickness. I just couldn't take this film. There was a sign posted at the ticket office with a warning that people were getting sick in the movie and they were getting tired of cleaning up after people :) Guess I should have listened. What I did manage to watch was awesome - especially the creature. I just wish they had kept the shakiness down to a Bourne level and not a way-beyond-the-worst-home-movie I had ever seen level.
Crossbow - I know the feeling you are talking about. I saw Saving Private Ryan when I was 8 months pregnant and we got there late so we had to sit really close to the screen....I was so sick. It does make for a miserable movie experience.
I'm glad to read your review here Jared. I really wanted to see it and then my hubby read all of the horrible reviews and we decided not to go. You always seem to like the same movies that I do so now I'm pretty confident I'll enjoy it. Thanks!
I actually did read several glowing reviews of this film, from sites like aintitcool.com. So, I decided to go with the positive ones instead.
Someone suggested somewhere that maybe on the DVD edition they can have a choice of "no shakiness" when you watch it. How knows - but that would be nice.
After seeing this film, read the Wikipedia article about it (not before - it will spoil it for you). They tell something about the last 3 seconds of the film that I totally missed, that could give away a lot about where the monster comes from.
Yeah, I pretty much thought it rocked however, I was one of the few in the theater. There were several cries of WHAT! THAT'S IT? and THAT WAS LAME.
I loved it too. When I tried to make a comment on how this movie spoke to post-9:11 fear mongering, I had my face torn off. That was on facebook though.
Just landed here from a friends recommendation, liking the blog.
