"The intellectual life is not the only road to God, nor the safest, but we find it to be a road, and it may be the appointed road for us. Of course it will be so only so long as we keep the impulse pure and disinterested; we may come to love knowledge - our knowing - more than the thing known: to delight not in our talents but in the fact that they are ours, or even in the reputation they bring us. Every success in a scholar's life increases this danger. If it becomes irresistible, he must give up his scholarly work. The time for plucking out the right eye has arrived. "

- C. S. Lewis
The End

Updated, 12/29/2014

It was nearly twelve years ago, in the wee morning hours at a Moot at BloDingle, that the idea of starting a "weblog" first occurred to the Thinklings.

What came next has been quite a ride! Especially in the early years, when the blogosphere was far more like the wild west and anyone with an opinion and the ability to turn a good phrase could gain an audience and delicious interaction with all manner of viewpoints. This was before the Darwinian rise of professional blogs and the distracting and overwhelming advent of social media made amateur blogging, for most of us, a trip into the wilderness.

It's been a blast. We've survived blog wars and spamalanches, enjoyed hours of meaty conversation and less weighty blog excursions that had us laughing until we cried. Everything from deep debates on Soteriology to the color of green Gatorade has been free game. We've had several blog-reboots and redesigns, we've expanded and shrunk our contributor ranks, been viciously hacked and lived to tell the tale, we've played chess and have even had a few Blo sightings. We've debunked, re-thunk, "friended" other blogs before that was a thing and have had our share of crazies and haters. We've built relationships with dear people we never met in real life. We saw at least one blog-friend get sick and pass away. We all (especially yours truly) have gotten older; there are Thinklings grandkids now. Personally some of us have been through serious (and unblogged) trials and have come out the other side. Thanks be to God.

For those of you, our blog-friends, who went on the ride with us, we thank you.

But all things come to an end. It has been quite some time since we as a group have done justice to the original purpose of this blog. We have debated shutting it down for the last few years and we finally came to agreement recently.

It is time. Farewell, friends.

God loves you blogosphere. And so do we.

How sad! I have missed and will miss your posts on Thinklings. But yes, to everything there is a season.

2. Raindream - 12/24/2014 11:08 am CST

Man. I won't be able to leave comments under this handle anymore. I assume you are taking the blog down. When do you think you'll do that?

3. salguod - 12/24/2014 11:29 am CST

Boo.

I get it, but still ...

This is the one blog (including mine) from my original blogging days of a decade ago that was still, somewhat, active.

I've been mentally toying with restarting mine, but haven't really gone beyond good intentions.

I hope you'll leave it up with a virtual sign on the door saying you're gone so we can still visit now and then. I'll understand though, if you prefer not to.

4. Bill - 12/24/2014 12:06 pm CST

We won't be taking the blog down - it will still be here. I just don't see any more blogging. We may or may not close comments ;-)

In other words, in many ways nothing will change (it's not like we've been posting anyway!)

I'll have to talk to the guys.

5. Brian in Fresno - 12/24/2014 12:19 pm CST

Guys, please accept my heartfelt thanks. It has been great to get to know you all and follow you. Jared, Bill,Phil and Bird, you are true friends that have helped me through some dark times. Some of my fellow commenters have been a great help too. Thank you.

May the Peace of the Lord be always with you. I thank God through Jesus for you all.

6. Bill - 12/24/2014 12:25 pm CST

Thank you BIF! God bless you and let's keep in touch!

7. Jen - 12/24/2014 1:49 pm CST

My blogging buddies! It's hard to believe that it's been 12+ years since we debated the actual color of Gatorade. I grew to love you guys as the brothers in Christ that you are and it's still somewhat amazing to think that we have never met in person after all these years. I am grateful for how you encouraged and challenged me with your thoughtful posts and the many, many laughs along the way. I've looked at Scripture better, read books and seen movies that I wouldn't have ever considered otherwise, and played some awful chess. I love you guys and can't wait to meet you, be it here or in heaven. May the Lord continue to bless you all.

8. Flyaway - 12/26/2014 2:54 pm CST

Waaaa! I'm sad to see you go. You are the blog who helped me to be brave enough to leave a comment. I could trust you to be kind. You are like my brothers. They all wanted to go to Mars. (Maybe you didn't want to go to Mars but I wondered at times.) They and you have been wonderfully entertaining. I never knew what you would come up with next. You will be missed. I hate going through another loss!

9. Karl - 12/27/2014 10:16 pm CST

You've seemed to be leaning this way for a while, so not a big surprise. And as you say, not a big change from the recent past either. But still, I am sorry to see it made official and will miss the Thinklings' presence on the web. Thanks for all your hard work, thoughtful discussions and the irenic spirit you brought to it all.

10. Andy (the Geek) - 12/29/2014 5:22 pm CST

Hey guys! Just wanted to say thank you for all your years of wisdom and humor and brotherhood, etc...

You will ALL be missed and I love you all.

11. G. Frederick - 12/30/2014 3:32 pm CST

Bummer. This is the only blog I ever read on a regular basis, at least when you were regularly posting. Have been missing your posts recently because there were none. I will miss this blog very much. You all challenged me to consider my beliefs more deeply rather than just accepting what tradition and upbringing taught me...not that I ended up rejecting any of it, but I did become a much deeper thinker and more considerate questioner. You guys have ROCKED. Thanks for the ride and may God bless you all greatly.

12. Bill - 12/31/2014 9:45 pm CST

All - thanks so much for the kind words!

13. Weekend Fisher - 01/01/2015 2:37 pm CST

All the best to you. Thank you for the great ride!

Take care & God bless

. . . and whenever I see a story like this, I will forever remember the Thinklings:

Yes, but... what colour WAS it????

Thanks for helping to make the Internet brilliant for so long. I remember writing a long time ago that this was a wonderful place where people could disagree graciously and that has always been true. That takes work and says good things about you guys.

Also, there are entire real-life friendships that wouldn't exist without this blog - my good mate Pigwotflies and Blestwithsons is the one that comes to mind, but I'm sure there are many more. That's amazing.

Anyway, as is traditional when reading Thinklings, I should be working.

Peace out, chaps. Heaps of love.

Unless it causes you extra work or ongoing maintenance hassle, I hope you will leave the archives and search feature up. There were some good discussions over the years. I've searched old discussion threads more than once to locate a comment or some give and take that I particularly liked on a given subject.

You will be missed
Thank you!

It's yellow!

Yellow green, I called and emailed the company.

24. Bill - 01/09/2015 6:03 am CST

Milly, thank you for your comment. But the low-level employee you spoke with is obviously wrong. I didn't need to call the company, I just looked at the bottle.

It's green. Completely freaking green.

:gwah:

25. Flyaway - 01/09/2015 10:52 am CST

LOL!

28. Daniel Ross - 01/19/2015 8:34 am CST

I love you guys! Thanks for the memories. It was a lot of fun over the years.

29. Ugo - 02/02/2015 9:09 am CST

This was the first blog I ever visited (I first commented on the 'Let's Talk About Protestantism and Catholicism' thread) and I have visited the blog frequently over the years for the owners' conservative yet astute insight into things.

Thinklings.org was the one place I was certain of getting Protestant arguments that contained well seasoned with reason and no fundamentalism, where a Catholic like myself could enjoy an honest, respectable debate.

It was real fun while it lasted.

30. Manders - 02/07/2015 6:49 pm CST

The end of an era! Thank you for a good long run, gentlemen.

31. Tom - 02/10/2015 3:19 pm CST

Thanks for the fun, guys. I'll miss it.

32. Raindream - 02/14/2015 1:24 pm CST

You know, a Thinklings podcast could be a winner. Thirty minutes of good conversation occasionally--mini-Moot like. What do you think?

33. Bjorman) Mulford - 02/26/2015 8:42 pm CST

I've only popped in every few months in the past few years (marriage, kids, career) but I always liked the idea that you guys would be here. I don't even know how I found you. I think it really was the color of Gatorade post and then I was like "thinklings sounds like inklings. Maybe these guys are cool." so I guess find me on facebook. I'll start updating my blog again. Baby 4 is due Sept 23. I love you guys as much as someone can love Internet strangers.

34. Lauren (Bjorman) Mulford - 02/26/2015 8:43 pm CST

I don't know why only part of my name appeared above. Sorry.

35. DLE - 09/15/2015 9:19 am CDT

So many of those original Godblogs and Godbloggers that started about the same time as I did with mine have ridden off into the sunset.

Feels lonesome.

Happy trails, Thinklings!
