Early Adopters Puzzle Me

Yes I love technology
But not as much as you, you see
But I still love technology
Always and forever
-- Kip

Hey, I love technology too. But I don't think I love it enough to do this.

Even at the height of my video game days -- which are pretty much behind me now -- I still wouldn't have fathomed camping out to score a Gamecube or a Playstation. I guess I'm just not an early adopter of technology. I'd rather wait a few months to see how people respond and to see if the particular product will actually be around once all of the hype dies down.

Speaking of hype: nothing lives up to it. I'm sure the iPhone is a cool gadget, but it won't change your life. Unless, of course, you're stranded on an island and you need to use an iPhone type device to call the rescue boat that's a few miles off shore ...

Now that’s nuts! Gee they need a life. Do something productive like taking a vacation to see all of the Thinklings. I'll be the one with a MoonPie!

Milly, would you camp out all night for a newly designed MoonPie?

Big T Bird,
Why would you change perfection?

I don’t know why you’d ask of such. What’s with that?

Plus The Bass Pro Shop has them right down the way from me. They have a cool BB rang in there also. ( Milly’s eyes light up with thoughts of sporting goods, fishing gear, guns, and MoonPies. Hey that has the making of a country song. Milly's MoonPie dreams came true at the Bass Pro Shop)

The greatest thing that Apple ever made was not an MP3 player, computer, or cellular phone. It is the hype machine. People are not camping out because they have a spare $600, or because they need a new phone. They are camping out because these little devices have the Apple logo on them.

Just make sure that you really want to contact that rescue boat. Because if they're the wrong folks, every living person on the island will be killed.

Well, yeah. But their stuff is pretty good. :-) Compare their mp3 player to, say, Microsoft's monstrosity. Or compare a Mac to Microsoft Wind'ohs Vista.NET-XP 2008 Enterprise Edition Pro (or whatever they're calling it)

(Not that I'll stand in line for any of it. I'm not an early adopter. Usually I'm not even a late adopter).

The thing you have to understand is that America is a nation of consumers. Just witness the people crowding the isles of Wallmart with their shopping carts. They are looking for something new which will replace the items they will throw out to feed the ever hungry and growing landfills. All in the name of satisfaction.

The iphone is just a hyped up version of the widget, or perhaps, the hoola hoop. And if one studies history you may find the cost of a satisfying toy continues to rise with each consecutive decade.
