God and the Island

I've been sick, and I've been spending my time doing a little reading and some DVD watching. So far I've gone through a couple of random episodes of Lost season two.

I came across an interesting exchange between Locke and Ben, back when Ben was being held hostage in the hatch armory. It went something like this:

Locke: You've been here, God knows how long!

Ben: God doesn't know.

Locke: Excuse me?

Ben: God doesn't know how long we've been here, John. God can't see this island any more than the rest of the world can.

from back when the purgatory theory was still valid in the minds of the writers?

Interesting. Or maybe it was just Ben shooting his mouth off. :)

That doesn't make sense. Certainly God would be able to "see" purgatory -- even in the writers' minds. Right?

They rejected purgatory during season one, if I'm not mistaken.

LOST is starting to gear up again. If you go to the ABC web site, they are releasing a new 2-3 minute video each week under a section labeled, "Missing Pieces."

Each video takes place within the plotline of seasons one through three, but add a bit of new information. So far, there hasn't been anything mind-blowing, but the clips are certainly entertaining and interesting to watch. So far, they have four clips up. Go to the ABC web site and click on LOST in the primetime section. In the left navbar, click on "Missing Pieces."

At the time, I just chalked Ben's quote up to messing with Locke's head. If God can't see the island, certainly the others feel they can "see" God. He's part of their brainwashing, after all. ("God loves you as he loved Jacob")

I love the spiritual aspect of the show.

[spoiler alert for those who still haven't seen the last ep of Season 3]
The more I think about it, the more I believe that the new season will take place off of the island. Each season has brought with it a new environment:
Season 1: The beach/Jack's cave
Season 2: The hatch
Season 3: The others' camp

Each season's environment was introduced in the last ep of the previous season. The end of season one brought the opening of the hatch. The end of season two ends with four castaways tied up at the others' camp. Season three ends in "real time" with Jack trying to get back. (Check out Missing Pieces for an interesting convo between Ben and Jack that relates to this)

I believe Season Four will largely take place in real time and involve flashbacks to what happened on the island during the timeline as we've known it thus far.

I believe this mainly because it follows the pattern set up by the previous two season finales. We will know when the show begins and the zoomed-in eye of a character is sharply in focus. Wherever they are is where we will be in the show.

Season One: Jack's eye on the beach
Season Two: Desmond's eye in the hatch
Season Three: Juliette's eye in her cottage
Season Four: Someone's eye in realtime (My prediction is Penelope, Desmond's GF)

Interesting theories, Quaid. If the Losties are moved off the Island for S4, then that would be a complete change from what's been done before, because up until now, everything has revolved around the island. Even when they were in the hatch, and in the Others' camp, they were still on (or near) the island.

In any event, the island is huge, and whatever they end up doing in S4 will either look back to the island or be directly linked to the island in some way.

If the trailer is legit, then it suggests that perhaps the Others were not the "evil" everyone thought they were, and something more sinister is on the horizon ... could it be the rescue crew from Not Penny's Boat? Obviously, whoever they are, they're happy they have found the island.

Interesting in light of the rotating quote up today: "There is no neutral ground in the universe; every square inch, every split second is claimed by God and counterclaimed by Satan."

- C. S. Lewis

I'm excited for Lost to return. I'm also looking forward to J.J. Abrams new movie, "Cloverfield"---the trailers are incredibly suspenseful.

My Lost theory is they will still be on the island, but instead of having flashbacks, they'll have flashforwards to the present---showing how miserable they will be once rescued (Jack's "we should have never left" speech to Kate). But the main action will still be on the island. We'll see in February.

gretchen,

I think a lot more people subscribe to your theory than mine. It's ok - I'm not too attached to mine - it's just a thought. Patterns are made to be broken, I suppose . . .

If your theory is correct - do you think that they'll carry that new method into the final two seasons as well? Also, what are your thoughts on my "new environment" theory? It's possible for part of my theory to exist combined with yours. If this is the case - what new setting do you see the LOSTies getting into?

Quaid, I think you are onto something with the "new environment" and the lingering shot of an eye which seems to open each season. I do think they will be on a new island in the chain, or discover a new building. The way they made the exodus from the beach tells me it is being left forever.

Every time I think I have Lost figured out? I don't. Back in the beginning of the first season, I was convinced they were in Neverland, a la Peter Pan. I cringe when I think of it now. LOL.
