"Membership in the family of God is neither inconsequential or something to be casually ignored. The church is God's agenda for the world. Jesus said, "I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it." The church is indestructable and will exist for eternity. It will outlive this universe, and so will your role in it."

It's Alright To Cry...

It might make you feel better. Don't believe me? How about NFL Defensive Lineman Rosey Grier.

FYI - Grier played with the Giants from 1955 to 1962, during which he led the team to a NFL Championship in 1956 and the Eastern Conference Championship in 1958, 1959, 1961 and 1962. Grier was selected for the Pro Bowl in 1956 and 1960, and was named All-Pro at the defensive tackle position in 1956 and 1958–1962. Grier was traded in 1963 to the Los Angeles Rams. He was part of the "Fearsome Foursome", along with Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, and Lamar Lundy, often considered one of the best defensive lines in football history.
(Oh, and he also tackled Robert F. Kennedy's assassin. Now if that don't qualify you for the man card, I don't know what does.)

Still don't believe me AND Rosey Grier? Read the post below. If that won't convince you, nothing will. :gcryingsmiley:

I think the Internet has been fully discovered now. Nothing else to see out there :)

How did they ever get this guy to do this? The pay couldn't have been that good.

Tony,
I think you are right. :-)

The truth is...it was the 70's. This was from a special financed by the Ms. foundation and aired on one of the major networks. Afterwards, it was forced upon many schoolchildren for years. It was based upon a book and concept by Marlo Thomas. In fact the show and book were called "Marlo Thomas and Friends" - "Free to be Me and You". It featured many celebrities.

Rosey Greer was sort of famous for being unafraid to show his feminine side. He also authored a best-selling book called "needle-point for men" and if you search for it on youtube, you can find a sketch he did with "Sha-na-na" poking fun at that sort of thing.

He was also quite the singer. He put out a few albums and there's a clip on youtube (in black and white) of him singing that's incredible.

Anyway, to answer your question...it was the 70's, and this show he appeared in had the very specific agenda of shattering gender stereotypes. It was hip to do that sort of thing back then.

Gaaack. Man, am I glad the 70's are in the past.

I do remember being forced to watch that show every year in health during "sex ed" week. I don't think I had any clue that there was a feminist agenda behind it.

I'm soo glad it's alright to cry because I'm crying after watching that. Love the man but....

Someone at Youtube comments mentions that there is no guitar in the actual song. When you watch, he's not actually playing that guitar.

Looks like they just handed it to him as a prop.

I listened to it again, and I can hear electric guitar, bass, piano and some brass, but no acoustic guitar. What do you musicians think? I'm sure they figured, "hey, kids aren't going to be able to tell the difference." Isn't pretending to play an instrument that's not even in the song a little like lying?

You see it all the time on TV shows especially - people holding a guitar and pretending to play but you can tell they don't know the first thing.

On a (very) side note, I really respected the movie That Thing You Do because the musical aspects of it have authenticity. They trained the four actors on their instruments and basically turned them into somewhat of a band, even though (if memory serves) they didn't know their instruments before they were cast.

I'm crying because the thinklings haven't posted in 6 days ;)
