"Membership in the family of God is neither inconsequential or something to be casually ignored. The church is God's agenda for the world. Jesus said, "I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it." The church is indestructable and will exist for eternity. It will outlive this universe, and so will your role in it."

- Rick Warren
Jesus Is . . .

"Jesus is not a pop song, snuggly sweater, affectionate boyfriend, a poster on your wall, self-help book, motivational speech, warm cup of coffee, ultimate fighting champion, knight in shining armor, or Robin to your Batman. He is blood.

And without blood, you die."

(Excerpt from my book Your Jesus is Too Safe: Outgrowing a Drive-Thru, Feel-Good Savior, coming in July from Kregel)

Man, you're bringin' it. (I would've said you're "on fire" but that would've sounded like "Man on Fire" a pop-culture ref.)
I'm excited about this book. It sounds like so much I rant about.

He is blood shed for others so they might live.

Me. Neither.

Will it be at all similar to Mark Buchanan's "Your God Is Too Safe"?

7. Jared - 03/17/2009 3:44 pm CDT

Love that book, Mike. A good one most haven't heard of.

Spirit is similar to Buchanan's book, but content not really.

8. Mike - 03/17/2009 4:47 pm CDT

Yeah, the Buchanan book is one of my all time favorites. Looking forward to yours!

We have to wait until July! RATS I WANT IT NOW!

But he is, I think, a lot like a Batman to your Robin.

Intense, mission-driven, unpredictable, and often terrifying when you just want to dress in red and orange and show off your acrobat skills.

CR - I was thinking the same thing - like at the end of "The Dark Knight" - Batman is the "anti-hero" - taking the sins of another character onto himself for the good of the city........but he's a Batman who doesn't need my stinking Robin.

Or, he's a lot like George Jetson, is he not? Flying through the skies, making "provision" for his "family" as Christ provides redemption for the Church.
And, again, he's like Dr. Smith of Lost in Space, hiding among us as we journey through the universe.
And finally, is not Alice, the Brady Bunch maid, not a type of Christ, always cleansing and cleaning our lives, humbly, offering wisdom and counsel, among us, yet not really "one of us", (as Alice is outside the family) and finally, uniting the brothers and sisters from "different tribes" (a blended family), making peace.
I'm sorry, guys, I guess I'm teasing--but it strikes me as funny when we try to make these violent, creepy movies redemptive. Hope you don't mind a little poking.
