"Membership in the family of God is neither inconsequential or something to be casually ignored. The church is God's agenda for the world. Jesus said, "I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it." The church is indestructable and will exist for eternity. It will outlive this universe, and so will your role in it."

Lost: Further Instructions

Yes, I'll be liveblogging the newest episode of Lost tonight. So you'll get another load of my whacky observations, random comments, and Jack bashing Jack benefit-of-the-doubting. Because he means well (and he does rock. He comported himself well last show).

***This post contains spoilers***

Oh cool, looks like (from the previews, at least) we're going to get some old-style Locke, back to being a bad, boar-slashing, camo-faced, manly dude. About time. I was getting really sick of whiney-Locke.

And Desmond! And Eko! And Charlie (sorry, I got carried away).

Oh look, it's Charlie and Claire (and her BAAAAYYYBAAAAAY). I'm sorry, I just don't see this relationship working.

And, unfortunately, Locke is mute, and Charlie can talk (and talk, and talk). Punch him, Locke!! Please! You've done it before! I can't take the charades!

***********************************
Charlie: "You do remember repeatedly punching me in the face and accusing me of using heroine when I was busy kidnapping babies and other assorted Lostaways and generally acting like a stone freak." I added that last part. Please, punch him . . .

Flashback: New character (Eddie?). Locke just picked him up. Considering Locke's luck, and the police flagging him down, this can't be good.

Locke's packing some major heat. Can't be good . . .

Out of flashback: Locke appears to be getting back to his old self (inscrutability, wild-man peyote paste, shirtless), and - WHOA! THERE'S BOONE!!!

This is really cool. And a lot more like the old Lost.

Someone's in danger. And this is a fabulous scene/hallucination . . . Especially the part where Ben's wanding Kate, Sawyer and Jack. But ticket-counter Hurley in the suit is my favorite.

I'm so glad we're back on the beach. Aren't you? I've missed it. It's way cooler than Otherville and the assorted hatches. And the thought of Locke on a rescue mission to save Eko . . . man, I'm giddy!

***********************************
Back in the jungle. Locke just mentioned the Polar Bear. Probably the mate of the one Sawyer blew away in season 1.

Flashback: John never answers a direct question. Nifty, rugged commune.

And a prayer from John. Redemption for John. Man, this is awesome.

Back from Flashback: I wonder if Charlie will regret hanging with John.

And, holy cow, look at that hatch-crater. And, doggone it, I sure have missed the boars, and the polar bears. And spinning jungle-cams. And Locke's knives.

AND HURLEY!!! Duuuuude!

***********************************
Good exposition by Hurley, while Locke tracks like he's Jeremiah Johnson.

Flashback: Eddie appears to have really assimilated well into the agrarian commune with the mysterious greenhouse and tons of fertilizer.

"Too many secrets". No kidding.

I really hope Locke wasn't a terrorist in his previous life.

Back from Flashback: Charlie's talking smack to Locke, but I don't know why he's so keen on going into the bear-cave.

***********************************
Whoa! Desmond. Man, I missed ya, brothah.

(He's naked, by the way. And bloodied yet unbowed).

"The hatch . . . blew off your underwear" - heh, Hurley.

Locke just found a toy truck in the cave. And now we're in flashback.

Oh, they're growing marijuana. And Eddie is a cop. And Locke has been betrayed again. I really can't picture Locke toking-down, by the way.

And I'm not feeling that great about that "community of faith" prayer earlier, either.

Back from flashback: bones, Dharma cloth, bloody Eko, and a polar bear. Lock just sprayed him (the bear, not Eko) in the face with an aresol can (with the mist passing through the fire. ouch). And he saved Eko! Locke rocks.

American express doesn't. I'm tired of their commercials bribing us to use their cards so we can go online and get more confused about Lost than we already are.

***********************************
Desmond in a Hurley tie-dye shirt. Hilarious.

"You're not gonna like, turn into the Hulk or somethin'" - I've missed Hurley!

Are they making Desmond look like Jesus on purpose? And what speech by Locke?

Ever notice that Hurley is really the only voice of reason on the island?

Poor Eko: there he is, stuck between the Locke - Charlie banter. Thankfully, I think he's unconscious.

Flashback: This can't be good . . .

Prediction (before it happens) - Locke gets paralyzed here. I may be wrong.

Don't do it Locke!

"Psyche profile said you would be amenable for coercion." - Tell me about it.

Eddie just said "You're not gonna shoot me". Remember Colleen? Dummy?

DON'T DO IT LOCKE!!!

Whew . . . (and I was wrong about the paralysis. Unless we have yet another flashback).

Back from flashback:

"You can still save them". Eko's so cool. I hope he doesn't die.

"After all, you are a hunter, John". Eko's so cool.

Aw man, don't die Eko!!!

Crud . . .

Wait, he's still alive. Maybe. I'm confused.

And who's this new chick? And why do all the new female characters on this show look faintly similar?!?!

And Eko's alive!

And Locke's a leader. Again. Thankfully.

"Not a bad spinache" - best line from Charlie all night.

Hurley's got the thousand yard stare and a deep sense of deja-vu . . .

Desmond's throwing rocks into the surf . . .

And so the show ends.

Good show this week. I give it an A- (the minus is due to too much Charlie :-).

***********************************
The previews for next week look pretty brutal. Can someone tell me who was screaming "Do you love him!?" to Kate? I couldn't tell. Please tell me it wasn't Jack.

Man, Sawyer's getting tortured again . . . that dude must be made of kevlar.

Are they making Desmond look like Jesus on purpose?

You do know that Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond) has played Jesus in two movies? (one is yet to come out.)

2. De - 10/18/2006 4:47 pm CDT

Does it seem far-fetched that the undercover police knew Locke would a) pick Eddie up as he was hitchiking and b) insist he join the marijuana commune?

3. Semicolon - 10/18/2006 5:04 pm CDT

[...] 1. De live-blogged the show at Thinklings. Unfortunately, we weren’t attending the same party. He says, “Locke is mute, and Charlie can talk (and talk, and talk). Punch him, Locke!! Please! You’ve done it before! I can’t take the charades!” We were saying, “Oh, good, Locke can’t talk. And Charlie can. Please let it last for a couple of episodes at least.” But it didn’t. By the end of the episode, Locke is making heroic speeches again. He’s the macho leader guy who’s redemed his mistakes by rescuing Eko, almost single-handedly. But I would have loved to have seen him carrying Eko on his back by himself all the way back to camp. Locke turns into The Hulk! Only he doesn’t. Charlie’s right. THey ignore him until they need him for guard duty or to hold up the other side of Mr. Eko. Then, Charlie’s their best friend. And Charlie is funny. Locke isn’t. [...]

4. Shauna - 10/18/2006 5:09 pm CDT

I need to watch the episode again to check, but I think I noticed three similar scratch marks on Locke, Eko and Desmond as well as the boar. Or I may be hallucinating. I half expected a dwarf to start dancing around and talking backwards in Locke's vision.

(And if you haven't already seen Henry Ian Cusick as Jesus, see The Gospel of John. It came out about the same time as The Passion but was a much more subtle but better adaptation IMHO.)

5. TheCalvinator - 10/18/2006 5:32 pm CDT

Desmond mentioned "the Speech" to Hurley early in the episode. When Hurley said there hadn't been a speech, Desmond looked confused for a second, and then said something like, "oh . . . yeah . . . right." Desmond's beard is significantly fuller than it should be in just one day since the hatch imploded.

Just how did Locke, Eko, and Desomnd survive that hatch implosion?

bottom line: Desmond did some time-travelling. that's why his beard is too full, and why he knew about Locke's speech before it happened.

Locke did not earn his way back into my good graces with this episode. And that has nothing to do with being part of the pot-head commune.

6. Cara - 10/18/2006 6:00 pm CDT

who was the guy in Locke's hallucination? This episode was a lot better than last year's combined. Cool, but confusing.

7. Shauna - 10/18/2006 6:04 pm CDT

It was Boone in Locke's hallucination.

8. TheCalvinator - 10/18/2006 6:04 pm CDT

That guy was Boone, Shannon's half-brother (or was it step-brother?). Locke was responsible for his death in Season 1.

I thought the actor playing Boone (I'm too lazy to go look it up just yet) did a great job with that sequence.

9. Jared - 10/19/2006 2:28 am CDT

And who’s this new chick?

That "new chick" was Kiele Sanchez!
Finally.

It was cool to finally see her after being teased by the presence of her name in the opening credits since episode one of this season. But it was weird how she and that other dude walked up and were all, like, talking to Hurley and them like they were part of the clique all along. Sort of jarring.

That said, in my mind, and in my best Comic Book Guy voice: Best episode (of this season) ever.
Loved the flashback, loved the focus on the Lostaways part of the island, loved the trippy peyote-dream thing.

I even loved having a glimpse of the old Charlie. The Charlie I liked before he went stonefreak and got smacked around.

I thought the commune dudes were survivalist militia-types and I thought they were making bombs in that tent right before Eddie said he wanted "in" on whatever they were gonna blow up.

I also thought we were gonna see Locke get paralyzed in a shootout or something with Eddie, but then he probably would have been in jail for a long time if he'd survived, not working at a box factory and planning trips to Australia. I guess we'll see his paralysis thing another time.

who was the guy in Locke’s hallucination?

Boone, played by Ian Somerhalder. Big part in the first season. Stepbrother of Shannon, Sayid's dear departed dame. Boone went on a mission with Locke in Season 1 and ended up dead.

Cara, you need to rent the first season of "Lost," because so much of even this third season plays off stuff that happened in it. Plus, it's just the coolest.
Watch Season 1, or else you'll be . . . lost. ;-)

10. Jared - 10/19/2006 2:29 am CDT

Oh, and great liveblogging, De! Detailed and hilarious.

11. De - 10/19/2006 3:34 am CDT

Thanks Jared :-)

Ok, a concern about next week . . . the Sawyer, Kate, Jack "love triangle" is getting so, so old. I really hope it's not a focus of The Others.

12. Jared - 10/19/2006 3:38 am CDT

Well, it looked they were going to torture Sawyer physically to torment Kate psychologically. I'm cool with that. ;-)

Seriously, though, I feel like they've downplayed the "triangle" a bit, what with Ana Lucia making it a quadrangle last season, and with undertones of Jack and Juliet getting "close" this season.
And I hate to bring her up again (not really), but Kiele Sanchez could have been brought on to play a new love interest for Jack too. (I thought I heard she was going to be an Other, but I guess that rumor was wrong.)

But, yeah, the triangle is dumb. If only because it's obvious Sawyer and Kate belong together. I'm one of those guys who roots for The Guy to get The Girl in every show I'm hooked on (Kevin didn't get Winnie Cooper, and it killed me; Dawson lost Joey to that mutt Pacey, and it scarred me for life; hooray that Ross got Rachel), and my The Guy in "Lost" is obviously Jack. If the The Girl is Kate, I really, really hope they don't end up together. ;-)
Sawyer can have her.

Loved the return of dream Boone. That whole scene in the airport was great.

I saw the greenhouse and the fertilizer and immediately thought "they're growing pot." When Locke laughed at Eddie's comment about getting in on the bomb planning, I laughed, too.

I don't think it's farfetched that the cops took the chance that Locke would pick up Eddie-the-hitchhiker. He's a do-gooder and likely to do that kind of thing. From there it was up to Eddie to do what needed to be done to get invited to the farm. That's undercover law enforcement.

I loved that this episode brought us back to season 1 - tying the whole thing together better. And I can't wait to see next week's episode. I think Benry was yelling at Kate about Sawyer.

[...] Some other people thought is was great. [...]

15. Jon - 10/19/2006 4:41 am CDT

The presentation of Paulo and Nikki was weird. I thought they'd be presented in a mysterious way, not as one of the 'regulars' that people know and trust as flight sruvivors.

I think Desmond has more of a John the Baptist vibe, you know clearing the way for the coming of the Locke!

I was hyped going in, but meh coming out. This was a catch up with rest of the show episode, like episode 2 was last year. Just marking time. We didn't really learn anything more. Locke trusts too much, gets betrayed too much, but never really goes the revenge route.

Charlie will become the Island tour-guide after they get rescued and they open the island up for tourists. The dude has been on like every quest the islanders have gone on.

Hurley rocks, and his delivery of choice lines is awesome. The airport dream sequence was really good, and a return of Boone as the guide for Locke was a nice touch. Boone never got a fair shake on the island.

16. Jared - 10/19/2006 6:02 am CDT

Oh yeah, we haven't mentioned Desmond's weird precognition with Hurley of Locke's speech.

Is Desmond psychic? That ties in to the paranormal angle (with Walt and all that).

Or did the anomaly, implosion thingy cause some rift in the space-time continuum?

I wonder if Eko will wake up with a vision for the flux capacitor.

17. Jon - 10/19/2006 6:50 am CDT

psychic or time traveler... he did appear nekkid, ala ahnawld in Terminator... Maybe he's been there and back again. Was the hatch a tesseract?

18. Molly - 10/19/2006 10:34 am CDT

Ah, dude, that episode was amazing.

My favorite scene was the dream sequence. Yay for Jabrams! It reminded me soo much of the hallucination type thing Sydney went through in ALIAS in the "Concious" episode. I love that element of the surreal, almost dizzy feeling you get in a dream. It's captured so nicely. I also loved how everything was incorporated together with all the people, the computer, the numbers, the stairs (remdinded me of "Aunt (Something) falls up the stairs Aunt (Something) falls down the stairs" thing), the personalities, etc. There was also some foreshadowing from Boone (though most of it I think we already knew). That whole sequence just made me really excited!

Can't wait for next week!!!

And I agree, Jared. My first thought was that one of the others is yelling at Kate and that they are torturing Sawyer to torture her and break her down emotionally/mentally.

19. TheCalvinator - 10/19/2006 12:19 pm CDT

Ahem . . . Please refer back to Comment #5.

That is all.

8^)

20. Stacy - 10/19/2006 12:54 pm CDT

Charlie is still one of my favorite characters...and Locke is my least favorite. I really liked this episode, especially Boone's reappearance in the hallucination. I'm excited to see what's up with Desmond, esp. his foreknowledge of Locke's speech.

21. Jared - 10/19/2006 2:45 pm CDT

Calvinator: Dude! Can't believe I missed that. I confess to, when opening up this thread for teh first time, finding it already full of comments and therefore only skimming them after reading Bill's recap.
Won't happen again!

22. Bethany - 10/19/2006 3:32 pm CDT

Daddy (this is Bethany if it doesn't show up) for the whole "Who is screaming DO YOU LOVE HIM?" I think its Jack because it sounds alot like Jack and Kate is saying "Jack!" so just my thought. It can't be Ben. Thats just weird.

23. small faith jenn - 10/19/2006 5:11 pm CDT

Okay, I've been thinking about this off and on today, and I have a question:

Wasn't Charlie in the vacinity of the hatch when it imploded? Locke and Desmond were locked inside and Charlie was helping Eko try to break in, right? Sooo, why was Charlie back at the beach with Claire and Aaron while the other three were blown to Kingdom Come? Did I miss something? Or is this another indication of some sci-fi time rift issue?

Just wondering...

24. Jon - 10/19/2006 6:16 pm CDT

The last episode of last season, Charlie came back after the implosion dazed and confused. He was surprised that Eko, Locke and Desmond hadn't made it back (iirc).

25. small faith jenn - 10/20/2006 3:18 am CDT

Thanks, Jon! It's been too long and there are just too many details to remember! But then again, that's why this is my favorite show in a long time, isn't it? :o)

26. Cara - 10/20/2006 1:14 pm CDT

I watched the first season of Lost, but I have a terrifically TERRIBLE memory for details. Even of my own life two years ago, and I'm the one who lived it! ;) I knew the guy looked familiar but I couldn't place him.

One of my Christian friends took me to task over my watching "Lost" because she said it has "supernatural" elements and "Christians shouldn't watch shows like that." I didn't really get into with her, but I loved the small guilty pleasure I got everytime I watched it after that. Felt like sinning, only not. Like eating a chocolate bar and knowing it has no calories. (not that that's ever happened). I'm Pentecostal. Do any of ya'll in other denom's deal with the "do not taste, do not touch, do not handle" friend/police coming around to criticize your entertainment choices? Any "Grey's Anatomy" watchers out there? (I find it hard to redeem watching that show, but the actors are so good, and I'm hooked.)

27. Jon - 10/20/2006 5:22 pm CDT

I'll take your Grey's Anatomy and raise you a nip/tuck...

Its funny, I see some real spiritual truths in some of the most secular places.

Heroes, What About Brian, Jericho, Lost, Grey's, Six Degrees, etc... I'm horrible. :D

28. Cara - 10/21/2006 1:41 pm CDT

True Jon, because we don't live in a sanitized culture. I watch Lost, Survivor, Grey's and AFV. Other than that I don't make a point of tuning into anything on a regular basis. Well, I check out Oprah, but I can only take so much of her. I watched one the other day about suicide (those who'd attempted and survived) and all three of her guests (one a bridge jumper, one shot his face off, one laid under a train and had 30 cars drive over her legs severing them) ended up giving AMAZING testimonies about Jesus and how they'd found him after their failed attempts. Incredible. Best evangelism I've EVER seen on television. I'm sure she didn't intend for it to come off that way... but God works in mysterious ways and so I try not to be too legalistic in my life. Ruins stuff.

29. salguod - 10/21/2006 4:14 pm CDT

Anyone else reading along in this comment thread and get tripped up by the word 'Daddy' in #22?

Maybe it was just me, but I didn't see that comin'. :-)
