- Rick Warren
I'm liveblogging the show - sort of. Blake had a game tonight so we taped it and we're just now watching it.
I'll be nice to Jack (if he's in this show).
****This thread contains spoilers****
. . . along with a bunch of random, pointless comments from yours truly.
Let us know what you thought of the show in the comments thread.
**********************************
Ah, this looks like a Sun episode. Cool - I like Sun.
Although it's kind of cold that little Sun just got her maid fired . . .
I'll write more if anything interesting happens . . .
Sayid rocks. Jin's being kind of "old Jin". but we're seeing kind of a new, spicier Sun here and she is so telling him to talk to the hand.
And Jin, dude, you really need to learn English.
**********************************
Juliet and Ben . . . obvious history here. And who's this Colleen chick?
**********************************
Not liking these new Others. And by that, I don't mean that I dislike them personally. What I dislike is the introduction of all these extra, "Others" characters every week. Guess we better get used to it, as it appears that this is going to be an "Others" season.
**********************************
Sun's flashback.
Ok, um, so all that conjecture about her having an affair and the baby not being Jin's. . .
Holy cow . . .
**********************************
Really not liking this Other "foreman".
And Kate, quit pretending to like Jack. You like Sawyer.
**********************************
OK, the scene of Jin getting his new career direction (as a hit man) juxtaposed with him hacking a fish to pieces . . . gak.
**********************************
Maybe they should have called this show "Kate's dress".
Oh look, it's another Other. A helpful one (in theory).
**********************************
Sayid . . . this plan of yours . . . I dunno. Didn't you swear off torture in season one?
**********************************
Heh - Jin understands English!
**********************************
Sawyer's got spunk. What's the point of this meaningless labor?
WHOA! Didn't see that coming!
**********************************
Man, Jin is one bad dude.
But with a heart.
WHOA! Didn't see that coming either!
**********************************
Anyone besides me miss Hurley? And Locke? And Eko?
**********************************
"I don't think they're coming". Man, Sayid. . . I'm surprised at you. This "plan" of yours has taken you down a few notches.
Hmm. Potential of a Colleen / Sun throwdown?
Man, these Others know everything.
[hiding my eyes . . .] Oh, and memo to everybody. If someone is holding a gun on you and says they are going to shoot you, don't get all snooty and say "No you won't!". Dumb idea, Colleen.
Zeke . . . I hate you.
**********************************
At least Sayid says he's sorry . . .
It was a dumb plan, Sayid.
**********************************
"Chain gang look good on you freckles." - Heh - Sawyer!
Kate, you're just now figuring out that Sawyer's real name is James?
"You taste like strawberries"
"You taste like Fish biscuit"
Evil Benry . . .
**********************************
Benry: "I want for you to change your, uh, 'perspective'". Chilling, dude.
Hey - information! Benjamin Linus (did I catch that last name correctly?). He's lived here all his life.
I can't help it. I like Ben. So far. Although he's looking awfully evil at the moment.
Heh - "Boston Redsox won the world series". Ok, this is funny.
This giving out of information thing. This is new to Lost . . . I think I like it.
I'm drinking that Others kool-aid now. The Others are good! The Others are good! The Others are goo- [De gets tazered by Juliet and drops like a sack of dirt]
**********************************
[De comes to . . . ]
Next week's show looks Awesome!
Final notes . . . When it comes to this episode, I think I ended up disliking all the main characters more as the show progressed.
Except for Sawyer.
And Jack (yes, I said Jack).
And, of course, Ben.
Good show. I give it a B+, only because I really don't like the "Others Work Crew" plotline.
Trackback URL: http://thinklings.org/bloo.trackback.php/3356.
I posted my thoughts at Semicolon.
However, I don't think the Others know as much as they pretend to know. I think they're desperate to find out some things from Jack and Kate and Sawyer. Especially Jack.
DUDE! That show was even better than the premiere! B+? That's it?
The commercial break before they broke into the ship had us all freaking out! And I SOOOO guessed that Colleen was going to die. You can ask anyone at the Coker's. As soon as her jerkface husband told her to be safe, I knew that she'd come back dead.
Now jerkface is going to take it out on James and Kate. OK - so Alex??? She knows the caged dude???
Benry is listening to everything. What does he need to know from Jack if he already knows everything? And why all of the lying when he was in the hatch?
We still don't technically know who's the baby's daddy. I bet Jin knows the truth about Sun and her affair. Do you think that guy really commited suicide?
So many questions . . .
Well, the ending of the show totally redeemed it. I would have given it an A but, as I said, the Others workday of "move those rocks over here" seemed just an excuse to get different angles of Kate in her dress. I'm tired of all the new Other characters. Although I really liked Sawyer in those scenes.
This has revived my hopes for this season, because I was nervous after last week's show. That being said, I think this season will be different than the previous ones - perhaps less mystery and more answers. Could be wrong.
I don't know if that guy committed suicide. My first reaction was that one of Sun's dad's guys was there to make sure Jin finished the job. Dunno though.
Oh, also - they have continued the new tradition of having very obscure episode titles. I don't get what the glass ballerina had to do, necessarily, with this show, other than the first scene.
And Sun's boyfriend falling from the building, and perhaps Sun falling from the boat. Other ideas?
I wasn't thrilled with this epi. I'm a little irritated by all the new characters with the exception of Ben, and Juliet's Ally McBealesque smirk annoys me.
I was disappointed to learn that Sun may not fall too far from the tree after all. I don't believe Jae killed himself. Either Sun's dad finished the job or he sent someone else to do it because he knew Jin wouldn't kill him. And when Jin told Sun he knew she had deceived him, I don't think he was referring to Sayid's plan.
Didn't any of the Others ever discover that Alex is the one who let Claire go, or is she possibly on the run now? Maybe they blamed Claire's escape on the young guy in the cage and that's why Alex was asking about him.
I wonder who'll be the new leader back on the beach. Locke seems a poor choice considering what happened last time he insisted on having his way...
Hi again, everyone - back again with a comment probably WAY off the mark - did anyone else get an impression that SUN may have been the one who pushed Jae out the window?? He was clutching the string of pearls he gave her, almost like he grabbed for her as he fell?
Any other theories why he had the necklace in his hand? Did I miss something?
Benry's remark: "I've spent all my life on this island."
If true, this would dovetail well in to my previous theory posted in the last Lost thread. The island wasn't just a research outpost, but a full colony. It looks like they have a population of maybe two to four hundred people, judging from the scene in the previous ep. where we saw that surreal neighborhood in the middle of a valley.
Sun was perfectly justified in shooting Colleen. She had no reason to trust her based upon the Others track record and she was holding a gun. I know that may seem like an obvious conclusion, but I'm getting tired of the whole moral equivalence schtick after having a liberal doese of it from Battlestar Galatica. At this point, I would be half-inclined to blow all the Others off the map if I were a military planner who had to assess it as a threat. These people wage an unprovoked war upon innocent survivors and then strut around declaring they're the good guys? Yup, they're definitely drinking the Kool Aid. Hope you have fun drinking it to, De.
The underlying theme of this episode is honesty (like no one could catch that). The most unlikely character (Sawyer) shows some and comes out on top for once (even though he's beaten a few times for his troubles) and the ones you would expect to show it, dont't, and suffer as a result. Ben shows some honesty (apparently) and displays more deceit, which seems to go along with the theme of the Others apparent moral ambiguity. Does it strike anyone that Jin has been the most trustworthy person among the Lostaways thus far? Oh, and now that Sayid has pulled a Jack, do you think you might let up on the harshness? (Just pulling your chain a bit)
Any other theories why he had the necklace in his hand? Did I miss something?
There was a definite implication, with the shot focusing on Jin's look upward, that Sun's father might have sent a second person. And from the rather sniveling reponse of Jae when Jin put a gun to his head, he didn't appear to be too distraught over loosing Sun.
Oh, People. Jae had the necklace in his hand because it was his way of expressing his dying devotion to Sun when he jumped.
Or ...he was standing there holding it when one of Sun's dad's thugs pushed him. But I think the first one...
De,
I loved your running commentary. I could tell exactly what part you were talking about with each sentence. It was cool.
The Other's making Sawyer and Kate work rocks: Am I the only one who thought that was more "experiment"? Especially given the instructions about shocking. I think that was more behavioral study stuff.
And look at what the Other's made Michael do to win his freedom! What in the world will they tempt Jack to do? To me it was rather ominous, that he will be tempted to do worse...
"Oh, and now that Sayid has pulled a Jack, do you think you might let up on the harshness? (Just pulling your chain a bit)"
Well, I think I already have! :-) I even said I liked Jack in this ep - and I did criticize Sayid.
Everyone please put down the torches and pitchforks . . .
I don't think Sun pushed Jae out the window. But I liked Sun a lot less in this ep than I usually do. It's not the moral failure so much as her deceit.
"I’m a little irritated by all the new characters with the exception of Ben, and Juliet’s Ally McBealesque smirk annoys me."
Although she is an intriguing character. As Sawyer said, she would have pulled that trigger without giving it another thought.
I'm not thrilled with all the new characters either.
"And look at what the Other’s made Michael do to win his freedom!"
Well, if I can defend my Others homies for just a second: All they told him to do was bring back Sawyer, Kate, Jack and Hurley, and he'd get WAAAAAAAALLLLLLTTT! back. I don't remember them ever telling him to go off on a homicidal rampage [to, imo, cull the Lost herd of some characters that were causing the writers and the cast some problems . . . See? It's the writers who are evil!]
No, Michael did that on his own.
Jin rocks the kasbah.
Twice as tired of The Others as I was last week.
Hope Jack snaps Benry's neck.
Hope Sawyer snaps Zeke's neck.
Don't care if Sawyer and Kate end up together because I really don't care for either one of them.
Still no Kiele Sanchez. :-(
;-)
I think the glass ballerina may be a metaphor for Jin and Sun's marriage. The idea that it fell and broke at the fault of Sun, but she has yet to accept repsponsibility or come clean.
Similar to her father knowing the true story of what happened to the ballerina, I believe Jin knows the truth about Sun's infidelity. As someone mentioned above, however, Jin's undying love will see past Sun's mistakes and he will (and already has) forgiven her.
Although Jin can be quite . . . uh . . . cavemanish in his approach to gender roles in marriage, he loves Sun deeply and has shown that he would lay down his life for her.
I'm not sure what the work thing is, to be honest. Do we still believe that the Others are conducting experiments on people?
Do you think that as soon as the plane crashed and Henry sent his minions to mingle with the survivors that they sat down to plan what experiments could be done with the lostaways? I don't think that psychosis plays a part in the series.
What were they doing with Claire (and her baby) in Season 1?
I thought these first six episodes were focusing mainly on Jack, Kate and Sawyer. It looks as if next week they may not be in the show at all.
I'm really hoping for a Lock flashback. I think that his is the backstory that might be most intriguing, given what we don't know about him. How'd he get paralyzed? What's up with his dad? etc.
"Twice as tired of The Others as I was last week."
With ya! Although I like Benry and Juliet.
"Hope Jack snaps Benry’s neck."
I predict that they will somehow become allies. Mark my words.
"Hope Sawyer snaps Zeke’s neck."
Yeah, me too.
"Don’t care if Sawyer and Kate end up together because I really don’t care for either one of them."
I like Sawyer. I can't help it. And have you ever noticed how much physical punishment he takes ever week?
I think either Evangeline Lily isn't "feeling" the love triangle nuances, or she's getting some bad direction, because I find this "I love Sawyer, I love Jack, I love Sawyer" thing to be really silly and her acting of it to be very stilted. I'm not buying it.
But if I had to pick which one she probably is most compatible with it's Sawyer, hands down. They are so much alike.
"I’m not sure what the work thing is, to be honest. Do we still believe that the Others are conducting experiments on people?"
No idea.
I think that Lost needs to tread carefully here - we've known about the Others for two seasons but we still, really, have absolutely no idea what their motives are. What the heck are they trying to do?
I think a show can only go on so long with those question marks hanging before people despair and lose interest.
I would love a Locke backstory, and some renovation on his character, which rocked in S1 but which got really, really messed up in S2. I don't like whiny Locke at all.
"I thought these first six episodes were focusing mainly on Jack, Kate and Sawyer. It looks as if next week they may not be in the show at all."
Thank goodness! Get us back to Lostaway camp, puhleese!
Jin is now officially my favorite Lostaway.
Great recap, Bill, of a great episode.
I have nothing to add here.

Stroke was somewhat surprised, or at least displayed disagreement, with the fact that I liked this episode better than last week's. I like it better because:
1- The suspense on the boat. Going to commercial with Others creeping onto the stern of the sailboat sent screeches through our LOST party and my fiancee gripping my arm as if she were on the boat herself.
2- Someone died. I know that sounds stupid and might be indicative of bloodlust, but it was STINKIN AWESOME when Colleen said, "I know you're not a killer" and then got shot. (Which is why I'm not sold on the fact that the marriage-wrecker jumped to his death. If Sun isn't afraid to kill now, she wasn't afraid to kill then, either.)
3- SAWYER KISSED KATE. (Why have we not mentioned this until now?) Regardless of motives, it was a pretty tight move.
4- Jack's scene where he realizes that the BoSox won the Series. VERY well acted. The look on his face as he realizes that these people are technologically with the rest of the world was cool. It was his only scene and it was a good one.
Don't get me wrong. Last week's episode was pretty good, but without the first five minutes, we would have been discussing how the show is going downhill in Season 3. It's refreshing to see that the show hasn't really lost any steam (IMO). . .
I'm onboard with the Jae jumped theory. Though it really doesn't matter.
The Glass Ballerina theme is all about how Sun can be as lying manipulative as her father. Her actions on the boat with Jin and Sayid show that she only really looks out for number one, though she is still trying to think more about her and Jin together.
Sayid has proven to be as horrible a tactian as Jack. None of his scheming military plans seem to come across very well, though he keeps coming across as, 'dude I was a military intelligence (THAT should hit people in the head with a cluebat!) I know what I'm doing...'
Oh and he recanted his foreswearing torture last season when he took Benry to task... remember he learned the mastery of interrogation from Kelvin, the ex-CIA Dharmalar.
Someone died. I know that sounds stupid and might be indicative of bloodlust, but it was STINKIN AWESOME when Colleen said, “I know you’re not a killer†and then got shot. (Which is why I’m not sold on the fact that the marriage-wrecker jumped to his death. If Sun isn’t afraid to kill now, she wasn’t afraid to kill then, either.)
I'm sort of wondering if she's not dead yet and will become Jack's next project to work on, especially if Ben makes it part of his offer. I agree with the notion that Sun may have killed before and think it's an interesting idea that she finished the job when Jin didn't.
That's an interesting catch. Jack has to operate on her. I bet they take him to the state of the art operating area where Claire got puntured.
I wonder if he'll do the surgery.
I really, really can't picture Sun as having killed Jae. What would she have been doing there? She was at home when Jin left to "deliver the message".
I put this in the same boat as "Juliet is Jack's half-sister". Possible, but very scanty evidence to support it.
Very interesting theory about Jack operating on Colleen. Although it should be assumed (and I think it's been shown) that the Other have medical personnel.
Jack's great as a doctor, but I don't know that the Others *need* him. I could be wrong.
For what it's worth, I thought this episode was WAY better than last week. One cool five-minute opening scene does not last week's ep redeem.
This one would have been perfect if they could have done the Others work detail part differently. It was just buggin'.
"THAT should hit people in the head with a cluebat!"
LOL!
With you on Sayid. That whole thing seemed very, very lame.
As people have pointed out to me in my Jack-bashing, the entire disasterous operation was Sayid's idea in the first place. So maybe I need to start wailing on him ;-)
Back to the "Ben & Juliet are an item" discussion:
When Colleen came down the hatch to talk to Ben, we got our first look at his monitor station. We also heard Colleen ask, "Am I interrupting something?" Juliet replies, "Would it matter if you were?"
Now, maybe I'm reading too much into this, but this exchange seemed charged in the direction that Ben and Juliet are/were an item. Obviously, it's not an open and shut case, but I think how they handled that conversation put a point in the "past relationship" column.
As far as the worksite, when Sawyer and Kate got there, there were other people already working. I really don't think it's an experiment. While they were working, Juliet and Colleen's (possible) widower were looking at plans, as if they were getting ready to build something - as if there was legitimate work to be done.
What's up with the kids that they stole - where are they?
And did anyone else hear the tree-moving monster in the background while Kate & James were chatting it up in the end of the ep?
And Ben said something to Juliet like "you never made me soup" - that's one of the first indications I've gotten that they have (as I put it in my review above) "history".
I wondered if "you never made me soup" was an indication that Ben, now the leader of the Others, was at one time a prisoner of theirs.
But, as in all things "Lost" theoretical, that's just speculation.
"I wondered if “you never made me soup†was an indication that Ben, now the leader of the Others, was at one time a prisoner of theirs."
Wow, that would be something!
ooh, i like that theory. he has been there is whole life, ya know?
i also just read a possible connection. last night they mentioned an "Other" named brian. brian is also the name of walt's stepdad, who put michael and walt on flight 815 and knew of walt's "gifts."
About whether Jin knew about the affair: I'm now sure he did, because when he was "delivering his message" to Jae, he asked him repeatedly "Do you know who I am?!" and he also, when he was telling him to leave the country, told him "If you have any contact . . . "
Contact? With who? I think it's obvious that Jin put two and two together. He must have known about Jae already in some way, and read between the lines of what Sun's dad had told him about the shame Jae had brought on their family.
Also, my appreciation for Jin has gone way up (as my appreciation for Sun has gone down). Jin does, indeed, rock the Kasbah.
Finally - I rewatched the ep. A few final observations:
OK, I know I'm in the minority, but I think the "Others" really do have a desperate need of some sort. Not unlike the Lostaways. I saw it when Benry said "I want that sailboat!" - I saw it when Ben showed Jack evidence of their knowledge of the real world, and when he put Jack's question back to him "Yes Jack, Why don't we leave?". They need Jack, Kate and Sawyer for some reason. They have not been entirely merciful or ethical in capturing them (Just as the Lostaways have killed and tortured some of the Others). They really do see themselves as "the good guys". Meaning, somewhere out there in the jungle are the "bad guys". Another group of "Others".
In other words, the brutality of Ben's "Others" group is not cruelty, it's desperation.
Also - Jack is going to either cave or pretend to cave. I think he's been beaten down too far at this point. He's desperate too.
And I look forward to next week, because we get Hurley, Locke, Eko, Desmond (and even Charlie and Claire), and we get - I think - the Monster again!
I disagree that Jin knows about Sun's unfaithfulness. His reaction when he found out that she was pregnant was not at all suspicious. And remember she said "I have never been with another man. That's a promise." If he had known that she had been with another man, and then heard her emphatically promise that she had not, I don't think he could have concealed his anger and pretended to believe her. I really don't think he knows.
So, how old is Ben and how long have the Dharma dudes been on the island? I thought they had gone there in the seventies, but Ben looks like he's in his mid-forties at the youngest. Maybe the when Dharma people the "Others" were already there and overthrew them and took over?
Did Coleen not have a gun with her when she went down into the boat? How stupid is that!
Maybe the when Dharma people the “Others†were already there and overthrew them and took over?
Woah! What is up with that sentence? That was published after midnight, can you tell? Okay let me try saying that again: Maybe when the Dharma people came the "Others" were already there and took over.
From what I remember, Dharma started in the mid 60s after the Cuban Missile Crisis. I think that Benry could pass for mid-30s.
The old woman at the book club, however, could be a Dharma original. I wonder whose mother she is - if anyone's . . .
I've been thinking about the Alex scene - it was kind of stupid. Kate is asking her a questions and she responds with "Where did you get that dress?"
She got it at K-Mart. Where do you think she got it? The question should have been "How did you get that dress?"

If you are talking about the one I think you are talking about, the helpful Other is one we've seen before . . . Alex.
