Lost: The Little Prince

Some (extremely random) thoughts on the latest episode of Lost.

******* Major Spoilers Follow ***********

I'm told by my French-speaking daughter that The Little Prince is a French book.

Jin . . . oh man, that made my night! YES!!!

For once I'm ahead of the game. I totally called that Ben was the client.

Does anyone agree with me that Jack is being way too incurious regarding Ben's motivations in all this? Is he really motivated to help those left behind on the island? Believe that and I've got a bridge (or a Dharma hatch) to sell you. I'm with Hurley - it's better to be in jail on a murder rap than to do what Ben says.

Me no likee pistol-packing Gangsta-Sun . . . I miss the old Sun! Maybe when she's reunited with Jin things will get back to normal. And, as you can see, everyone is beginning to come up with good motives to go back. Well, most everyone. Jack, because his life in LA has become totally pathetic. Kate, because she's being blackmailed by Ben. Sun, to see Jin, now that he's not only alive but in the same time-warp context (I think) as the dwindling band of remaining Lostaways. Aaron . . . because what little boy wouldn't want to grow up on a cool island of mystery. Sayid, because he's completely in Ben's sway. No matter what he says he will do, he always ends up doing whatever Ben wants him to do.

Hurley will still take some convincing. But I'm sure Ben will be convincing.

I laughed when they came upon their deserted camp and someone said "where is everybody?" Um, haven't they noticed that pretty much all the redshirt Lostaways have been terminated? Seriously, the average life-span of a redshirt these days is about 42 seconds.

So, who was shooting at them when they were in that kayak thing?

Danielle Rousseau - I totally called that too as soon as they came upon the French wreckage. She looks far less crazy in her early days.

The nosebleeds can stop, now. Gross.

I was kind of relieved when Juliet's nose started to bleed, because for a moment there I was afraid she and Sawyer were going to kiss.

OK, if you're "not allowed to change anything" in the past, how come everything's changing in the past. There are proto-others being killed in the past, shipwrecked future-people (Jin) being discovered by French scientists in the past, etc. I don't think that rule means what they think it means.

Good episode tonight. Although I'll be glad when Locke turns that wheel or whatever to stop the flashes. They are starting to make my nose bleed.

How does Locke know that Ben did something to leave the island? He wasn't there to see Ben do it. Does he know about the wheel?

So many questions, even as the back-story fills in. But that's Lost.

I'm enjoying this season so far.

Jin . . . oh man, that made my night! YES!!!

Ditto!

2. Andrew - 02/04/2009 11:26 pm CST

I was playing chess on my phone, so I didn't catch the French wreckage, but as soon as I saw the pregnant belly, I said "Rousseau." My Lost party-mates thought it was impressive. :-)

3. Hank Harwell - 02/04/2009 11:40 pm CST

How 'bout this?

The whispers the Losties heard on the island were their time-warp selves...

4. jen - 02/05/2009 2:49 am CST

I knew as soon as I saw the dude floating in the water that it was Jin. Happy Dance!

Maybe it's my pregnancy brain, but I can't keep up this season. I am so confused by what's going on.

5. Bill - 02/05/2009 6:30 am CST

Hank,

Interesting theory (I've heard that one) - although if true there's got to be about 100 more jumps, because the whispers were heard all the time in season 1.

Andrew - you were playing chess during Lost?

On the previews for next week - they show Ben telling Sun that Jin is still alive. HOW WOULD HE KNOW?

How does Ben know all this stuff?

Why does he want them to go back to the island?

It's funny - I used to think that Ben was good (this was up until he let his daughter get killed) but just misunderstood.

Now that Jack has bought Ben's spiel hook, line and sinker (and rod, and arm, and . . . keep going) I just don't see it any more. Ben's evil!

From now on, the only character I'm trusting on this show is Hurley. And maybe Sawyer.

6. Jared - 02/05/2009 7:39 am CST

Ben is evil. Always has been.

And Jack isn't fooled. He's using Ben b/c he knows he needs to get back to rescue everybody else. He's tricking Ben into thinking Jack thinks he's on their side.

That's how BRILLIANT Jack is!

7. Sherry Early - 02/05/2009 9:14 am CST

You've got to be careful even with Hurley. He lied last season to help Locke, of all people. Remember when he pretended to be locked in that closet?

Jack is still coming off a year or two long drug binge, Jared. And he's still besotted with Kate. Did you see how he looked at her? Brilliant is not the word I'd use to describe him. Half-cocked, maybe. Gullible. Or maybe I'll just stick with drugged and besotted.

8. Quaid - 02/05/2009 9:34 am CST

JIN!!!!!

Firstly, let me say how pleased I am with LOST this season. So good.

My guess is that Desmond is on his way to LA and, in about three episodes, the Oceanic 6, along with Des, Penny, Lockesicle, Chollllie? Aaron? will be on their way to the island. Ben can't go back, right?

What we're missing right now is Bentham. Doesn't Locke interact with everyone before dying? That puzzle piece is a-missin'.

There's nothing too crazy about this particular episode. Miles and Juliet are now nose-bleeders. Why isn't Faraday? He tried to correlate time on the island with strength of illness. Because Sawyer and Locke have only been on the island three months, they'll be the last to get sick? But where does CS Lewis fit? Miles? And we saw Faraday by da bomb a couple of eps ago - was that time travel Faraday or "1970s I don't age" Faraday?

This is all crazy. Is it weird to think that the season is already 25% over? WE JUST GOT STARTED. Four Episodes down, thirteen to go.

9. Quaid - 02/05/2009 9:37 am CST

BTW, can we get Rousseau Roberts to do a translation of the French dialogue? Did we miss anything???

10. Crossbow - 02/05/2009 1:57 pm CST

Bill - no one has changed the past yet. We have never seen those proto-others that are dying - so who is to say they weren't dead all along? Jin will disappear with the next time flash, so he hasn't changed anything, etc.

11. Taylor McRae - 02/05/2009 2:10 pm CST

I'm so upset that I missed this episode! ARGH! Oh well. The one thing that I'm still not really sure about is the whole Faraday time traveling thing. Now, and this is just me, could Faraday be one of The Others? If not, how would one explain him "jumping around" through time? That part is a little confusing.

Other than that, I give this new season a BIG thumbs up! ^_^.

12. Brian - 02/05/2009 2:13 pm CST

What we're missing right now is Bentham. Doesn't Locke interact with everyone before dying? That puzzle piece is a-missin'.

I was wondering about that too. Alpert(?) seems pretty convinced that Locke has to be the one to get everyone back to the island. But so far we haven't seen him doing much of anything except looking pale. I think what we haven't seen is Locke convincing Jack that they must go back. And now Jack and Ben getting the others on board. But I still don't see how it was crucial that Locke leave the island.

OK, if you're "not allowed to change anything" in the past, how come everything's changing in the past...

If you believe what Farraday said, then you have to think that it always happened that way. Anyone remember if Rousseau shows any recognition of Jin when they first meet?

For a second, before I realized when they were, I thought that might have been Charlie instead of Jin. Now that would have been cool.

13. Molly - 02/05/2009 3:41 pm CST

Randy - I don't think anything too important was missed. I couldn't catch all of it, but what I did catch was stuff like "What are you doing?" or "Get him some water".

And The Little Prince, or Le Petit Prince in French, is about this little boy who meets this guy with a plane and they fly around the world and go on adventures. It's a very whimsical book. Though I've only read half of it, I can't see too much of a connection. So maybe it's not talking about the book. But who knows!

My friend has this theory that C.S. Lewis is Desmond and Penny's child - "Charlie" could be short for "Charlotte". Interesting! Not sure how that would work, but I wouldn't be surprised, with all the time stuff, and it would explain why she's been on the island for a long time, I suppose, assuming Desmond and Penny and their kid really do come back. A little far-fetched, but I just wanted to throw that out there.

14. Andrew - 02/05/2009 3:42 pm CST

OK, if you're "not allowed to change anything" in the past, how come everything's changing in the past. There are proto-others being killed in the past, shipwrecked future-people (Jin) being discovered by French scientists in the past, etc. I don't think that rule means what they think it means.

Well, it could be that time is stuck, and that they were always meant to go back in time. Locke says, "Come visit me." Alpert goes. Alpert went to see Locke "before" Locke ever went back in time to tell tell him. It might also explain why the Others seemed so ready for company when the plane crashed. They've been hearing all these stories of strange people coming to the island, saying they're from the future and talking about a plane crash. When we watched the plane crash at the beginning of Season 3, it wasn't as if they knew exactly what was going to happen, but looking back, it's as if they were thinking, "Is this really it?"

For all we know, Rousseau may very well have a vague memory of meeting a Korean man on the beach that day. The others that lived may all remember their friends being killed that day.

In the Back to the Future model, Marty McFly goes back and changes everything. We haven't yet seen a butterfly effect or anything like that. The future (or present) seems pretty stable.

It might help to not think of time as present, past, and future. They are unstuck, but what happens, happens and always has happened. Always will.

Up to this point, that's how I've tried to think about it. Then again, Desmond woke up "suddenly remembering" the thing about Farraday's mother. Can't be sure what that means.

15. Evan - 02/05/2009 4:31 pm CST

There's an article over at EW about the book 'The Little Prince' and how it relates to this episode.

EW article

Make sure you click to read the rest of the article after this page as well. I think the writer gets a pretty good bead on the significance of the title by explaining how the 'Little Prince' regrets leaving his meteor (and rose) and eventually becoming stranded on earth.

16. Bill - 02/05/2009 4:46 pm CST

For a second, before I realized when they were, I thought that might have been Charlie instead of Jin. Now that would have been cool.

Now that would have been very cool. But I think it being Jin is even cooler. I'm so stinkin' happy that Jin is still alive. I want Sun to put down her gun and become the Sun we once knew, and Jin, Sun and their baby to live happily ever after. If that's all that ends up happening in this show, I'll be happy.

Man, Sun does have a dark side, doesn't she?

Molly - I don't think Cholly is Charlotte, mainly because I'm pretty sure that's a little boy.

I think it's very highly likely that Ellie (the chick with the rifle in Alpert-camp) is Daniel's mom (eloise). I read a theory today that she is also Widmore's sister. Which would be yet another connection, and also might explain why Charles Widmore was supporting the health care of Daniel Farraday's unstuck in time girlfriend.

17. Bill - 02/05/2009 4:47 pm CST

On the Little Prince, doesn't the main character die or something? I've heard that the Little Prince might be a reference to Locke/Bentham.

18. Bethany - 02/05/2009 9:30 pm CST

Yeah, I think Cholly is a boy. And I don't believe Desmond's last name is Lewis. (Do we know it?)

I thought it was a good ep.
But, I don't think we can go back to season 1 and look to see if anything was weird, cause at that time the writers didn't even know all this would happen. Ya know?

I don't know. I try not to think about it too much.

19. Bird - 02/05/2009 9:39 pm CST

Desmond's last name is Hume (not sure I spelled it right).

20. Andrew - 02/05/2009 11:57 pm CST

You spelled it right. It's in keeping with Lost's apparent obsession with Enlightenment philosophers.

21. anonymous - 02/06/2009 6:49 am CST

What we're missing right now is Bentham.

Didn't Ben leave the body of Locke with that woman at the butcher shop a few episodes back?

22. Quaid - 02/06/2009 9:14 am CST

Yeah - the body was left with her. When I wrote "what we're missing is Bentham" I referred to the gap in the story. We don't yet know how he got off the island, communicated with everyone and got whacked.

As far as gangsta-Sun is concerned, we saw a glimpse of it when she paid off Jin's blackmailing mama. Remember? She said, after paying her off, "Jin thinks your dead, don't force me to make that a reality!" Then she shot her this crazy "I'm-a gonna kill you" look that I hadn't seen before and is back.

Thinking further upon this episode, they're making Ben's character a little less cool and a lot more ethereal. It's gone past "I know what you don't know" to "I'm controlling everything about all of your lives" and I really don't like it. What was cool about Benry Gale on the island was his struggle to control everything. Sometimes he won and sometimes he lost. They also did well to play up the question of who, exactly, was this guy. Even when they did his flashback ep that explained how he had gotten to the island and his work thereafter, they still left the question of who he was in relation to the Others, Jacob, etc. open to question.

We still don't know everything about him. For example, what is his relation to Eloise? What are they doing? Who are they with? But this isn't being played up, as much. What happened to "We're the good guys, Michael"

Another question:
Who do you think Aaron will end up with? Let's make this a two-parter.
Who will end up with Aaron after the next few shows?
Who will end up with Aaron at the show's finale?

My guess: Aaron will end up with Claire's mom who oh-so-conveniently happens to be in the City of Angels.
Aaron will end up with Claire when she returns home, however that happens.

23. Michele - 02/06/2009 12:45 pm CST

It kind of bugs us how Kate keeps calling Aaron "her son". Flashbacks of Michael's constant, "Give me back my son!"
The part where Sawyer saw Claire giving birth was sort of cheesy to me; The film looked grainy from the past; it just didn't seem real seamless--I could tell it was just an old show pieced in, it didn't seem like he was actually watching it.
One last complaint: Using a different actress for young Rousseau was absurd! You don't change that much in 20 years.
Besides the above I thought it was the best show of the season so far. I'm liking how Sayid is always Kung-Fuing his way around. I couldn't believe it when Jack just doy-oy-oy, walked away from the room, leaving him in possible danger. Should've known ole Sayid would be on top of it.

Sorry. How redundant.

26. MR. PUMBAHSTIC - 02/06/2009 4:12 pm CST

OK IM EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO BLOG HERE!!! LOST IS BECOMING REALLY GOOD. I THINK THAT SUN WILL GO BACK TO THE ISLAND BUT SHE WILL NEED MORE CONVINCING THEN HURLEY

27. Quaid - 02/06/2009 4:19 pm CST

Uhhh . . . ok.

As far as Kate goes, if you had a little baby boy in your custody that you took care of for three years straight, even though you knew it wasn't your physical baby, wouldn't you consider him your son and you his mother? Especially considering the idea that he would never see his real mother again? (After all, she did just leave him in the middle of the woods and walk away)

I'm not fanatic about Kate, but I stand by my thoughts about her not being nearly as bad as everyone thinks she is.

Bill, if you're still reading this - Did you really believe that Jin was dead? Somehow I never believed he was. I believe that Michael is dead, but not Jin.

And at what point do you think we'll see WAAAAAALLLLLT again?

28. MR. PUMBAHSTIC - 02/06/2009 4:26 pm CST

OK... SO I WAS THINKING AND CONVERSING AND I REALIZE THAT ANYTHING THEY HAVE IN THERE HAND THEY CAN KEEP!! LIKE WHEN THEY TOOK THE BOAT AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND THEM WAS SHOOTING AT THEM AND THE BIG FLASH HAPPEN THEY WAS STILL IN THE BOAT. NOW IF THEY WERE IN TIME THE BOAT SHOULD OF WENT AWAY AS WELL COMPLETELY DROWNING THEM.

NOW
IM FORCED TO BELIEVE THAT THEY CAN KEEP WHAT EVER THERE HANDS ARE ON! OH YEAH HOW COME EVERYONE HAS TO GO BACK TO THE ISLAND BUT WALT ?

29. Bill - 02/06/2009 5:02 pm CST

Mr. PUMBAHSTIC

Welcome! You must explain your name :-) What's it mean?

(also, can you take off your caps-lock please? You're shouting at us)

Bill, if you're still reading this - Did you really believe that Jin was dead? Somehow I never believed he was. I believe that Michael is dead, but not Jin.

I believed that Jin was dead only because to not believe it left me open to having my hopes dashed.

But I wasn't completely blown away when he was alive. This is Lost of course.

Now, riddle me this - how come Jin was "within the radius" and is flashing around, whereas the freighter is not?

And at what point do you think we'll see WAAAAAALLLLLT again?

Hopefully never. I thought that whole storyline and the "He's a very special boy" stuff was lame-o. The Benryism "He was more than we bargained for" was a really weak do-away-with-that-pesky-plot device.

I guess for continuity's sake, I should hope that all that gets resolved.

30. Jared - 02/06/2009 9:14 pm CST

PUHMBASTIC:

Tyrone, is that you?

31. Taylor McRae - 02/07/2009 12:40 am CST

Here's my take on Jin being in the flash radius. What if, and this is a BIG what if, you could come into the time warp radius AFTER the initial blast? That might explain why Jin is found floating at sea in the previous episode.

As far as Walt goes, I cannot remember WHY Walt is so important. Wasn't he killed off in one of the previous episodes? My LOST memory is rather fuzzy at the moment.

Also, I think the ability to keep items you are carrying/using during the time flashes is significant. What if they tie this into getting the other LOSTies back on the island?

Any thoughts?

32. Quaid - 02/07/2009 8:41 am CST

There was at least a few minutes between when the explosion occurred and when the island warped. Maybe Jin jumped off the boat after the helicopter? (I'm trying to remember the series of events) Maybe he was thrown from the ship in the direction of the island by the force of the explosion and somehow managed to crawl onto some wreckage before passing out?

For all we know the radius extended to just a few feet from the boat.

The reason I bring up Walt is that he has been a significant character. Obviously we know about his abilities from Season 2/3. There was a reason the Others specifically wanted him. His appearance to Locke in the grave cemented his importance to the island. If nothing else, we might find him in Jacob's shack hanging out with Claire and DrunkDoc. I do agree with you, though, that they seem to have neglected his story line - it's very close to the inconvenience of the island monster which only appears when they want to explain something about it away.

33. Bird - 02/07/2009 11:31 am CST

According to the Lost bigwigs, Walt is going to play a prominent role at some point.

34. Quaid - 02/07/2009 6:52 pm CST

Really? If you don't mind me asking, where did you hear this? Was it after he appeared to Locke?

I would imagine his role is significant, but I can't think of what it might be. His parents are dead. The only other black person on the island, outside of Rose who is no relation, is Ms. Klugh (is she alive?) - so, as far as blood relations go, she's his only link to the natives.

It's obvious that he did some damage while there, but I wonder to what extent he knows anything. I wonder if he'll appear, somehow, on the voyage back to the island.

35. TheCalvinator - 02/09/2009 6:14 pm CST

The last time we saw Ms. Klugh, she was being shot by Mikhail. She told him it was alright, and he plugged her. Now, whether she meant "It's alright, I don't blame you" or "It's alright because we both know I'm immortal so this isn't going to kill me" we have no idea.
