Love Me Some Gene

I just watched part of Hoosiers for the millionth time -- I love that movie. I especially love Gene Hackman in that movie.

As a young lad, I would mentally typecast Gene as Lex Luther. Anytime I saw the guy in a film, I'd think, There's Lex! As I matured, I realized what a great actor the guy is.

I especially loved him as Rankin Fitch in The Runaway Jury. He's such a convincing villain.

Does anyone have any good Gene Hackman suggestions for my Netflix queue?

I haven't seen it, but I understand that he went hard in The French Connection.

I liked Enemy of the State.

YES!! Right on, Bird.

I went through a watch every "Gene Hackman is the Hero" phase a few years ago and it was well worth it. The dude rocks. You may not follow all of my suggestions, but make sure you get the ones I bolded.

Here are some suggestions:
Welcome to Mooseport (2004)
Runaway Jury (2003)
Behind Enemy Lines (2001)
Absolute Power (1997)
The Chamber (1996)
Extreme Measures (1996)
Crimson Tide (1995)
The Firm (1993)
Unforgiven (1992)
Class Action (1991)
Narrow Margin (1990)
The Package (1989)

Mississippi Burning (1988)
Bat*21 (1988)
No Way Out (1987)
Target (1985)
A Bridge Too Far (1977) .... Maj. Gen. Stanislaw
The Poseidon Adventure (1972)

OK, so he's the bad guy in a few of those. But he's still AWESOME!!!!

The Poseidon Adventure!

I was going to recommend Crimson Tide, too.

Gene Hackman is awesome in Unforgiven!

If you want to go real "old school", you can see him in a supporting role in Bonnie and Clyde!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I'm pretty certain he won Oscar for The French Connection. I caught a clip of it earlier this year and it made me want to see the whole movie. Since I am so generally unfocused, however, I haven't gotten around to it.

In the clip, Hackman was awesome.

I'm surprised no one mentioned The Conversation

Also, back to Bird's Hoosier's love:

I think Gene did great in that one, but I would have liked him a lot better without the forced, December-May romance with Barbara Hershey that they injected into the plot.

I'm with Shrode. My first job was in a video store. (a small one before Blockbuster ate 'em all) I used to recommend The Package over and over... no one had ever seen it - and they always came back and thanked me for the recommendation.

And what was that fun one he did with the little boy...where he was an action figure that came to life? I loved that movie!

Blest, you might be thinking of "Cloak and Dagger," one of my favorite movies from when I was a kid.

But that was Dabney Coleman, not Gene Hackman.

One interesting thing about Cloak and Dagger is that it is set in San Antonio, where I lived for a long time. At one point the characters enter the "Tower Life building", and a shot of the external of that building is shown. I worked in that building for four years, so that was pretty interesting.

Of course, the internals of the building as shown in the movie was a set and was nothing like what the Tower Life really looked like inside (it was, for instance, much smaller inside the real Tower Life building than was portrayed in the movie).

Good movie, that one.

Ah yes! That's it! I wonder if Daniel is old enough for that one.... I bet he is!

Jared, are you sure you and I aren't related somehow? ;-)

Blest, could be! :-)

De, I love the scenes at the Japanese water garden and the Alamo too!
