McCain't Be Counted Out

Divisive Dem Contest Could Boost McCain

Among Obama supporters, 20 percent said they would vote for Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the Republican nominee, if Clinton beats their candidate for the nomination. Among Clinton supporters, 19 percent said they would support McCain in November if Obama is the Democratic nominee.

This comes a day after a Reuters/Zogby poll showed McCain "winning" over either Democratic candidate. Rasmussen polling is currently echoing the same positions.

Granted, polls like that are just snapshots of the voting climate that day, but it certainly speaks against the alleged certainty of a Democratic victory in the fall.

Eeyore, how you feelin'?

And where's the "Lost" liveblog? :-)

I don't take these polls too seriously. It is in the interest of the obama/clinton supporters to lie, so that the people on the fence will say, "Oh, dear, if I don't vote for so-and-so, McCain will win." With both of them doing it, it kind of cancels itself out that way. If only one were doing it, their candidate would probably score a bunch of super-delegates who were worried about electability

Who was counting McCain out in the first place? Granted, the momentum of Clinton & Obama during the primaries was somewhat daunting - up until Romney dropped out. Still, we all knew that regardless of which candidate emerged, despite temporary bad feelings, most all conservatives will back McCain in about seven and a half months.

Speaking of, seven and a half months is a very long time, politically speaking. So much can happen between now and then.

We'll see how the two sides coalesce after the conventions. Just as many conservatives vowed to never support McCain a few weeks ago, most liberals will fall in line as soon as a candidate is named.

Given this notion, I generally reject the "if ____ doesn't win" polls. I put more stock in the "if the election were held today" polls, although when you're almost 200 days away from the election, they also mean relatively little.

And - yes - where is the LOST post?

I was going to blog Lost last night, even late, but we totally forgot to watch it!

And, on Eeyore - you can start calling me that when I make my dire predictions about the election - which I haven't done yet.
