- Rick Warren
Do you have a favorite speech from a movie that you share with a friend, spouse or family member? You know what I mean. Where at the appropriate moment, something happens, and one of you cites the first line, and then in glee the two of you finish the speech together. Or one of you starts it, and the other finishes it. And in that moment, you've bonded. :-) Or maybe it makes the two of you laugh out loud every time. At the very least, it's an inside joke that makes you smile.
Share some with me under comments and don't forget to tell me in what contexts you use the speech.
Here's one of our all time favorites. We use it every time we want to say that something stinks.
Bernice Pruitt: At home we had a pet skunk. Mama used to call it Justin Matisse. Do you think that's just a coincidence? All day long she would scream, "You stink Justin Matisse!" Then one day she just picked up a club and killed it.
Justin Matisse: Now that's a sad story.
Bernice Pruitt: If you liked the skunk, which we didn't.
From Hope Floats. The part of Justin Matisse was played by Harry Connick, Jr.
Makes me laugh every time.

We have a million of them. Just a few:
The entire Miracle pre-game speech, any time someone needs some inspiration. My daughter Bethany can quote it from heart.
Lately, some from the best movie of 2011, Megamind [ducking as the movie snobs around here throw tomatoes at my head]:
- "Soft yes? Soft yes on Thursday?"
- "'Olo"
A classic from City Slickers. My wife and I answer phone calls from each other this way:
- "Helooooo?"
A few from The Emperor's New Groove, all Kronkisms:
- "In my defense . . ." (I say this one all the time)
- "Mission Accomplished."
We basically quote movies all the time around here.
Sticking with movie speeches:
"Down here it's our time. It's our time down here.
That's all over the second you ride up [beat] Troy's bucket."
-The Goonies
. . . taking place at the end of Mikey's speech at the bottom of the old moss garden wishing well.
Mikey's speech follows Mouth's speech which ends with:
"I'm taking them back. I'm taking them all back."
I quote Gangs of New York with my roommate all the time. All of the lines spoken by Daniel Day-Lewis. And then Liam Neeson's exchange with young Leo at the beginning of the movie?
"The blood always stays on the blade. Now. Who's that?"
"St. Michael."
"Who's that?!"
"ST. MICHAEL!"
"And what did he do?"
"He cast Satan out of Paradise!"
"Good boy."
what makes a king out of a slave? courage.
what makes the flag on the mast to wave? courage.
what makes the elephant charge his tusk,
in the misty mist and the dusky dusk?
what makes the muskrat guard his musk? courage.
what makes the sphynx the 7th wonder? courage.
what makes the dawn come up like thunder? courage.
what makes the hottentot so hot?
what puts the ape in apricot?
what do they got that i ain't got?
(you can say that again.)
Pretty much the entirety of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. A group of my high school friends and I. Someone can quote almost any line and the others can pick up and run with it. A few common starters:
"How do you know she's a witch?"
"I didn't vote for you!"
"Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system!"
"Bring me a shrubbery!"
"Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin . . ." (sung)
And a couple dozen more. Also the rhyming game dialog from the Princess Bride.
I love the Hope Floats speech - I've seen the movie once, I wish I could remember it - that's an obscure reference, but I love it........I also love the special hell one, haven't seen that one - is that a film or a TV show?
When I think of movie speeches that we quote a lot - the obvious ones are "Any of you h*m*s call me Francis, I'll kill ya"......"shut up Francis" - from Stripes........and "Did we quit when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" from Animal House........
My friends and I do this much more often with Seinfeld - our favorite is (when Jerry is at rental car counter and they can't find his reservation) - "Any one just take reservations (Jerry's arms flailing like he's writing down reservations like crazy).....but its the hold - the hold is really the most important part of the reservation"
Another good Megamind one that was getting some play today around the house:
"Good luck on your date!"
"I Will!"
"That doesn't make any sense!"
"I Know!"
My church band and I have a few ...
"You may be square with the Lord, but the state of Mississippi's a little more hard-nosed." (O Brother, Where Art Thou)
"If I-s (eyes) can change and yous can change, we all can change." (Rocky IV)

"If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater." (Shepherd Book in Firefly)
generally actually referenced at the theatre... Last time I went to a movie with a friend there were so many noisy people who wouldn't shut up that I took to abbreviating it by whispering "Special hell! Special hell!" every time... This one is true with multiple people (pretty much any browncoat, which is about half my friends if not more)
Second, my dad and I will quote "I could deny that, I could deny anything if I liked" from The Importance of Being Earnest when ever applicable.
