"Membership in the family of God is neither inconsequential or something to be casually ignored. The church is God's agenda for the world. Jesus said, "I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it." The church is indestructable and will exist for eternity. It will outlive this universe, and so will your role in it."

Star Trek: It Is Logical

I saw Star Trek (the new one) for the first time a couple of nights ago (spoilers to follow). As a serious "Trek" enthusiast -- well, at least as far as the original series goes -- I must say I thought the new film captured the magic of the original motion pictures quite splendidly, and, despite an implausible storyline (what sci-fi doesn't have an implausible storyline?) the film was a nice expansion to the Star Trek canon.

(On a side note, it's unfortunate that the new film had to succumb to the whims of an oversexed society by throwing in a "benign" sexual escapade between Kirk and some green alien chick. While Kirk was always known as a playboy of sorts in the original series, the forerunners of the series wisely chose to leave out screen-played sexual antics. I only wish J.J. Abrams and the new boys could have been so, well, logical.)

Speaking of logic, the part of the movie I enjoyed the most was seeing Leonard Nimoy back in action as Mr. Spock. I hadn't read any reviews or recaps before screening the film, therefore seeing the original Spock was a pleasant surprise. Spock has always been my favorite Star Trek character, and I was glad to see Nimoy pass the baton to the new Spock, Zachary Quinto. Certainly Quinto looks like he can develop a believable Spock character, and, perhaps 40 years from now he'll be passing the Spock legacy on to another newcomer.

While Star Trek is not a great film (like, perhaps, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country), it was entertaining, intriguing, and a good, logical resurrection of Gene Roddenberry's original Star Trek idea.

oh come on, its not nearly as bad as Undiscovered Country. its not Wrath of Khan but its worth watching more than once and worth investing a few bucks on a DVD copy.

I saw it at the theater (with Enkurio.)

LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT!!!!!!!!

I thought they captured the original characters beautifully. Everything that was good about the original Star Trek is in there, without the cheesy special effects.

McCoy was FAN-tastic. I also thought the expansion on Uhura's crush on Spock from the original series was well done.

And Eric, did you notice that they use some dialogue about Kirk's past from the original movies as part of this one's plot? (For Example, the Kobyashi Maru and the no-win scenario. I LOVE that they showed that.)

I'm hoping I get it for Christmas so I can watch it again and again.

Jared, this is the Star Trek you need to watch. Oh, nevermind. You'll probably still hate it. ;-)

I didn't get to see the movie myself until long after it was gone from most theaters. On the whole, I enjoyed it. Some of the acting was just bad impersonating (especially Scotty) but Quinto was a good Spock, and that's essential. It's kind of nice to know that the voyages will go on. It's especially nice to know that the reboot was made with the original characters, who, to my mind, remain the heart and soul of the entire franchise. At the same time, it's going to be a different kind of thing, clearly aimed at teeny boppers and even junior highers -- sort of "New Moon Saga" in space.

So the magic is broken for me, but it was really past time for that to happen anyway, and it's nice to know it will live on for others. Star Trek is dead. Long live Star Trek.

Yeah. Caught that. Great stuff. Half the fun of watching the movie was catching all the references to the original series and original movies.

NOOOOOO! Eric, don't say that! (Even if it's true.) Now Jared will never watch it.

Man, you sabotaged that one.

Just ignore him, Jared. Sometimes Bird just spouts off. There's nothing in the movie that's understandable to geeks only. Really. You can know nothing about star trek and love this one. Really.

I mean, come on, it's J.J. Abrams. Can the guy who invented Jack Shepherd do anything wrong?

I think you meant "do anything else wrong".

FWIW Jared.......I'm not a fan of Star Trek at all, and I liked it.....better than anything Star Trek I've seen.......I remember my wife dragging me to that Star Trek movie about the whales (don't know which one that was, but I remember how much I hated it).......this one wasn't bad though, though I thought Eric Bana's villain (and his whole plot for that matter) was kinda dumb.....I did like the fresh takes on each member of the Enterprise crew though.

I loved it. I thought all of the acting was awful, but that was part of the charm b/c the acting in the TV show was awful, too. I thought it was perfectly cast. I loved seeing Captain Pike, although I admit to being slightly disappointed that he was in a normal wheelchair instead of that iron lung type chair from the TV show.

I'm looking forward to the future movies in this new-old bit of Star Trek lore.

9. Jared - 11/30/2009 4:39 pm CST

I was actually inclined to see it. But now I think it will be more fun to keep being a Star Trek Scrooge.

Jared, I really do think it is safe for you to see. It is a pretty good movie. I would say about a seven on a 1-10 scale. You don't really need to be a trek fan to enjoy the movie. Besides you could go see it and say you didn't.

For the record, there are no huge canyons in Iowa.

Right now there aren't.

Star Trek is arriving at my house from NetFlix today.
If I dislike it, it will be another 22 years before I give Star Trek another try, which is how long it's been since I saw Wrath of Kahn, which everyone said was the best of the Trek movies.

14. TheCalvinator - 12/05/2009 10:09 am CST

Jared, although I do love Wrath of Khan, the best Trek movie was First Contact.

The new one is really good.

15. Bird - 12/05/2009 11:13 am CST

The Calvinator has gone off the deep end. Don't waste your time on First Contact, it's not even an original series film. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy FC, but it's not for everyone.

The best Trek is Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III as one continuous story. To me, that's the pinnacle of Trek excellence. Other than that, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is a great stand-alone trek film.

If you're not a Trek Head you shouldn't watch I, IV, V, or any of the Next Gen-based movies.

16. Jared - 12/05/2009 8:32 pm CST

Just watched it. It was all right. I'd watch a sequel if there's one.
I don't have any interest in going back and revisiting Khan or watching any previous Trek films, though.

17. Shrode - 12/06/2009 6:27 am CST

Wow, Jared. What a big step. Welcome to the dark side. ;-)

Don't go watch any of the old films. I'm content just to have you get on the train now, without insisting you go back to any of the previous stops. ;-)

"I'd watch a sequel" - Hey, I can live with that answer. Makes me happy. ;-)
