"Membership in the family of God is neither inconsequential or something to be casually ignored. The church is God's agenda for the world. Jesus said, "I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it." The church is indestructable and will exist for eternity. It will outlive this universe, and so will your role in it."

- Rick Warren
Taking a Stand

Rev. Harrison stands firm against our Government's meddling in the consciences of people of faith. Well done - respectful, clear, and eloquently plain-spoken.

Bill, can you tell me what the issue is here?.....is it that Obama's plan includes prescription coverage for the abortion pill?.....I'm hearing a lot of buzz, but I'm not sure exactly what Christians are protesting.....thanks in advance.....btw, this guy is sharp and well spoken - very interesting.

The basic issue, as I understand it, is that the new healthcare law forces organizations to cover contraception. The Catholic church in particular is fighting this, as the law will require them to cover contraception for their employees at catholic hospitals, etc, and that is in direct contradiction with their teachings. Another concern is that it will include abortion-causing drugs.

For more information, and from a Catholic viewpoint, I recommend The Anchoress

I think freedom of religion is at stake. Will the government tell us to do things that are against our conscious? Nurses at church sponsored hospitals are being told they must assist with abortions. Adoption agencies are being told they must let gay couples adopt. State license clerks are being told they must issue marriage licenses to gay couples. I don't know all the issues but more and more that take away our freedom of religion are popping up.

At its heart, this is all about government control, and a population that wants "good" things from government, but often gets angry when those things come with "bad" strings attached.

If you want government to guarantee and subsidize/pay for Americans health insurance, then things like birth control, abortion, etc. are bound to become dictated by government.

If you want government to give you a tax deduction for you contributions to your church, then you will have to abide by speech restrictions they require, such as not advocating for particular candidates, etc.

If you want government to pay for and provide your children's lunches, then you will have live with them telling you what they can eat.

If you want government to provide for your children's education, they will control what they are taught.

If you want the government conferring status and benefits on marriage, they will get to define what marriage is and isn't.

Religious and other freedoms won't be protected by just having your particular candidate in charge of government for awhile, regardless if you are OK with the "strings" they impose or not. It comes from getting the government entirely out of the picture and letting/requiring people to decide (and PAY) for these things themselves. Which has basically zero chance of happening in the modern day US.
