"The first and most important thing to say about John Dominic Crossan's work is that it is bad history."

The Painted Veil

Anyone seen this flick? It was so good.

It's an adaptation of the W. Somerset Maugham novel, starring Edward Norton and Naomi Watts (love her!) as a passionless doctor and his adulterous wife who fall in love while he works in the cholera-ravaged villages of 1920s China. (Yes, you read that right; it's about a husband and wife who fall in love.)

Great, great movie. Great acting. Masterful directing. The photography is beautiful. And the story is an awesome one of grace and forgiveness and sacrifice.

Anybody else seen any good movies lately?

Crazy!

My wife and I just watched this 2 nights ago. It's been in our queue for a while, and we finally got to it...

Thanks for posting this Jared.

Yes, it's a great movie. (It's been made 2 times before, but I'm pretty sure the old versions would be too boring for a modern day audience.)

Edward Norton and Naomi Watts are incredible actors.

And of course, there's the undernoticed Liev Schreiber who doesn't do much in this movie, but he just owns every scene he's in.

Btw, while I love Christian Bale, Liev Schreiber is still my pick for the new Batman. He would have been incredibally perfect.

Anyway, it was so cool to see a husband and wife fall in love. Very, very well-done movie.

Highly recommended.

Thanks for the recommendation. To answer your question, No. I haven't seen any good movies lately. They seem few, and far between, most times.

Any of you planning to watch Beowulf? I remember loving the story in English class. They've done a CGI version (3-D on IMAX!)(apparently incredibly realistic looking) but it has a horrible rating (R) and Angelina Jolie (even as a cartoon) all but naked. Too bad.

Loved The Painted Veil

I also found Premonition with Sandra Bullock to be a pleasant surprise. I'd definitely recommend it.

And of course, Amazing Grace was, well...amazing.

Anyone else seen either of these adn have an opinion?

My two favorite movies of all time are Les Miserables with Liam Neeson and The Crucible with Daniel Day Lewis.

Just love movies with grace as the theme!

Sounds good. I'll queue it.

Finally got around to seeing Pan's Labyrinth as it is currently playing on HBO.

Great movie - probably the best I've seen in several years. A mixture of a classic fairy tale and a war movie, superby acted, and just beautifully shot.

Best movie I've seen lately was "The Lives of Others." It's German, with English subtitles. Tells the story of an East German Stasi officer a few years before the fall of the Berlin Wall. If you like stories of grace and redemption, this is one that would please you. The ending is amazing. I wrote more about it on my blog here.

along with the sentinel, Premonition came out of nowhere and scored a touchdown. Great themes, along the same lines of forgiveness and accountability.

The P.V. sounds good...we'll have to try it out.

I don't watch many movies; the most recent good one I've seen was Stranger than Fiction (which I loved; if you haven't seen it, read the piece in the latest Books & Culture).

Jared

I recommended "The Painted Veil" to you in a thread a while back.....you thought what I thought, very good redemptive themes....."Premonition", while more redemptive than I expected, was still way too contrived for me to like or recommend...."Pans Labyrinth" was very interesting, but sorry, I didn't get the ending....can someone spoil/explain that one for me?
