Woman Bites Dog...Who Attacked Her Dog

Woman Bites Dog Who Attacked Her Dog

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Amy Rice feared for her dog's life when a pit bull jumped over a fence into her yard and attacked her pooch. So she took matters into her own mouth.

Rice says she bit the pit bull on the nose Friday after trying to pull the dog's jaws off her Labrador retriever, Ella. The dog had jumped a fence to get into Rice's northeast Minneapolis yard, and Rice says she feared the pit bull would kill Ella.

"I didn't plan it, that's what happened. I broke the skin and had pit bull blood in my mouth," said Rice, 38. "I knew what happened, and I knew that it wasn't good."

The pit bull was quarantined Wednesday by Minneapolis Animal Control officers while rabies tests are being completed. Rice's doctor will determine whether she needs shots for rabies.

"I was sure that my dog was dying in my arms; it was horrible," Rice said.

Ella is recovering with staples and stitches to her head and a crushed ear canal, but she is afraid to go for walks, Rice said.

Kill the pit bull.

I say this as someone who's daughter was attacked by one. The family who owned the pitbull (who's own daughter is a good friend of my daughter's) were going to do something about it but didn't really, until another friend of my daughters got attacked and ended up in the ER.

This happened last year and everyone's fine. My daughter's wounds didn't even break the skin as she was wearing a thick coat at the time (just left a bad bruise). Still if the dad (dog's owner) hadn't been there, or if it had gone for her throat . . . Well, let's not think about that. The other friend was attacked in the leg - skin broken, bleeding, stitches, etc. Again, the dad was there, thankfully.

The dog is now dead (they put him down after the second attack). I don't blame him - he was just being a Pitbull. That's how they are designed - to attack.

Kill the dog.

I love dogs but when one does something to harm others it has to be put down. Two of my dogs were ripped apart by pit bulls. I can’t stand the breed. I have a German Shepherd and I’d have her put down in a second it she bit a child.

It was rather dumb of the women to put her face so close to the dog. It could have decided to let go and rip her face up. I’ve had to pull a GSD off of a Rott when the Rott. Never put your face or hands in harms way.

I have a scar on my arm from training a puppy that went off on me when pushed. We dog owners owe it to the world to keep others safe.

OK, so I was just thinking of headline humor, but you guys got to the serious heart of the matter.

You are both right. That Dog should be destroyed.

You know, I think pitbulls are dangerous and should be outlawed, or seriously restricted. Really. They are bred killers.

I know that other dogs attack people occasionally, but with other breeds it's an aberration. With this breed it's normal. No one should be allowed to own one. Unless maybe if a zoo wants one on the order of a tiger or a lion or a hyena.

And if someone wants a "guard dog" get a doberman, or a German Shepherd, or a a really big lab. (Or an Akita - man, those things are huge and awesome!) All of those dogs do a great job as guard dogs and "protection", without attacking people unprovoked.

Pit Bulls are a real problem. Bill, I'm so sorry that happened to your daughter. That's horrible.

get a doberman

Too unpredictable. I’ve spent a lot of time around dog trainers and they are leery of the breed. Chows are also ones to watch they can't be trusted.

The main thing is to socialize your dog, even a small dog can do some damage.
