"And do you now begin to see why Christianity has always said that the devil is a fallen angel? That is not a mere story for the children. It is a real recognition of the fact that evil is a parasite, not an original thing. The powers which enable evil to carry on are powers given it by goodness."

The Superhero Movie You'll Never See

DC is getting shelacked by Marvel in the movie department. Granted, Superman and Batman are big deals, but where are the rest? There's a whole Justice League chock full of hero goodness ripe for the plucking. Marvel has been digging through the comic basement for lesser known heroes to do movies about. I think it's time that DC gave it a shot. Come on guys. How about this one? (Hint: you MUST watch to the end. I promise, it's worth your time.)

They need to make a live action version of this:

It should be R-rated for violence. There should be multiple nuclear weapons detonated during the movie with millions of people dying. At the end, there would be a cataclysmic battle, with Superman and Green Lantern vs. Bizzaro and Sinestro. That would be a great movie.

Actually, the original "Challenge of the Superfriends" was always very disappointing. It was a great concept, and it had a great intro. It had really good music and good voice actors. But the animation was very primitive. And network censors were very strict in the late 1970s - they would not allow much violence. Therefore, the fight scences had no punches, for example.

Marvel heroes are better than DC heroes. I think more people want to see regular folks rising to great challenges than revived gods beating up other gods or aliens. Think of James Bond. He's god-like in all the stuff he does and he fights men just like him. Change that dynamic to actual gods fighting it out, and you will lose loads of people.

Jeff,
I've seen "Challenge of the Superfriends" recently. I rented it from Blockbuster for my kids. They loved it, and I liked it a lot.

Here's why: minimal violence. My kids aren't even allowed to watch "Batman: The Animated Series" or "The Batman" or any of the current superhero cartoons, and my kids are bigtime into superheroes. They don't need violence.

If the show were for grownups you might have a point. I love the new Chris Nolan Batman movies...for me. But I also see it as selfish that we grownups take childhood heroes and fantasies and grow them up with us, thus taking the innocence away from our children.

Why, for example, must any modern re-telling of a fairy tell mock it or satirize it in some way? Why not just tell them straight up?

Raindream,
rereading Jeff's comment, yours makes more sense. I think your right. Seeing gods nuke each other isn't as much fun. (Though maybe sometime, like in Superman 2 or in the x-men movies)

But one could argue that Marvel heroes are gods fighting it out with equals too. But I think I see your point.

I think I'm a DC guy probably because of Batman. But Marvel has got us waaaay outgunned in the movie dept lately. (Which cracks me up because previous marvel movies before "spiderman" were cheese central.)

Well, I don't think comic books translate directly to live action, so film makers need to ditch the coverall pajamas and give the heroes completely new looks. I'll have to look at those videos.

I could be wrong, but I think a critical difference b/w the X-men and Superfriends or Justice League is that the X-men are normal people who have been changed--mutated--into the superpowered people they are now but the Justice League, except for Batman, are old gods looking for work.
