"Why do people choose the substitute over God himself? Probably the most important reason is that it obviates accountability to God. We can meet idols on our own terms because they are our own creations. They are safe, predictable, and controllable; they are, in Jeremiah's colorful language, the 'scarecrows in a cornfield' (10:5). They are portable and completely under the user's control. They offer nothing like the threat of a God who thunders from Sinai and whose providence in this world so often appears to us to be incomprehensible and dangerous . . . [People] need face only themselves. That is the appeal of idolatry."

My kids can't do that. But my kids have (wait for it) freedom!

;-)

That is nuts. Amazing, and unsettling at the same time. Funny (to me) that you posted this just as I finished reading "Lost on Planet China" a hilarious and insightful (though at times vulgar and profane) travelogue by J. Maarten Troost.

You mean North Korea, right? Cause I think these are North Korean children.

4. jen - 05/09/2011 8:59 am CDT

Clearly we're doing something wrong with our kids here.

What's freaky is that they can barely get their arms around the guitars and yet they can play like that.

5. Jared - 05/09/2011 9:02 am CDT

Scott, yes. The musical prowess of North Korean children is why the Chinese own us.
I am as confounded as you are.

Get Mr. Leslie to show this to his class. The girls were saying they didn't like taking guitar lessons in music class at school. (well I think Gracie thought it was "all right") :-D

What I see here are little robots that don't know or understand what they are doing. Mechanically the music is flawless. But there is no expression or feeling in the music. Dare I say that these children will never appreciate the beauty of music?

Hey - the boys here can run circles around my son with a guitar..........but my son doesn't wear white tights!.....those poor kids.

9. Quaid - 05/09/2011 10:23 am CDT

That's amazing.

They might own us before age seven - but that's before the North Korea brainwash machine gets going. After ten, they're useless. Do North Korean adults get to play music there?

I don't understand your title??? while i think there good playing - how do they OWN us?

11. Scott Roche - 05/10/2011 8:20 am CDT

BiF - I think you're way overreaching.

Anonymous,
The title is a joke. (Though like all good jokes, it has a germ of truth.)

The point of the joke (and we all know jokes aren't funny anymore when you have to explain them) is that their 5 year olds do stuff like this, while our 5 year olds watch blue's clues.

So if they are doing that at age 5, imagine what they can do (ambition and talent and drive-wise) when they grow up.

SO that's why they have all the money. The Chinese "own" us in the sense that we owe them A LOT of money. Haven't you ever wondered about the national debt? Who do you think the United States has been borrowing money from? Yep. China. Our children's children will be paying interest to the Chinese. Let's hope they never decide to collect on the debt all at once. China forecloseing on the US would not be a good thing.

See? Not funny anymore, is it? :-)

Scott,

Fair enough, you may well be right.

Yeah well. MY kids.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS5jLDFQ_i4 and there are other videos on there showing them playing their other instruments. (shameless mommy brag)

Just doing our bit for patriotism. And instead of pickin' on Blues Clues....I'd rather say most American kids play Guitar Hero instead of picking up real guitars. ;)

I never thought it was funny or accurate to begin with.....
however I do like your blog so keep posting
