"Why do people choose the substitute over God himself? Probably the most important reason is that it obviates accountability to God. We can meet idols on our own terms because they are our own creations. They are safe, predictable, and controllable; they are, in Jeremiah's colorful language, the 'scarecrows in a cornfield' (10:5). They are portable and completely under the user's control. They offer nothing like the threat of a God who thunders from Sinai and whose providence in this world so often appears to us to be incomprehensible and dangerous . . . [People] need face only themselves. That is the appeal of idolatry."

UFOs Are Real

So says a Japanese spokesman.

Am I overplaying this to note that this is the same country that was gung ho about hosting a big conference to persuade us that global warming is real?

Of course unidentified flying objects are real.

Flying saucers from outer space, however . . .

How can you be so naive? It's too obvious that the technology for the Playstation 3 can only have come from space.

dbd, that reminds me about a conversation I had back in 2000 when the PS2 was about to be released.

At one our church's homegroups, I overheard a college-educated aquaintence of mine telling another aquaintence that the PS2 is so powerful that small, rebel governments are buying them and using their technology to build high-tech weapons systems.

At the time, I was a bit of a video game junkie, so I walked over and told him that Microsoft was about to release a system that was even more powerful than the PS2 (the then-forthcoming X-Box), and that would mean the rebels would have even more technology to work with (I was joking with him about the rebels, of course).

The guy responded, "More powerful? How's that possible?"
