"And do you now begin to see why Christianity has always said that the devil is a fallen angel? That is not a mere story for the children. It is a real recognition of the fact that evil is a parasite, not an original thing. The powers which enable evil to carry on are powers given it by goodness."

- C.S. Lewis
Wall-E and Sex

Brant Hansen says Pixar's Wall-E is about gospel sexuality.

I think he has a point.

Btw, whatever it's about, Wall-E is a great film. You should see it.

Jared,
What do you think about it for small children (like a 5 year old?)

Anything inappropriate? (This is coming from a guy who didn't let his kids see "cars" til he screened it first. :)

I love, love, love, loved it!!

Shrode, I am insanely picky about what my boys (ages 10,8,6 and 4) see... I didn't have a problem with any of it. The four year old did get a little scared right at the end - he snuggled up in my lap and said "Is it over?? I wanna go home!"

Can I read the linked article/post without anything being spoiled? Haven't seen it yet, but I want to.

Quaid, I think so. It covers basic plot points but doesn't reveal any twists or anything.

Shrode, both my girls (5 and 7) saw it and loved it.

When "we" say it's about sex, we don't mean it mentions sex or has sexual innuendo in it or anything. You'll have to either read the review or see the movie to see what I mean.

Brant is contending that it's about traditional heterosexuality (albeit through the metaphorical lens of robots :-) and the masculine virtue of protecting life.

Quaid - don't go see it. You'll hate it. You might think it's the worst movie you've ever seen . . . Because I liked it, and there must be balance in the force.

You're going to think it stinks on ice.

My sister and her kids loved it, too.

We took our kids (3, 6 & 8) to see it a couple of days ago, and they all loved it. Even the 3yo. I think he enjoyed it because there wasn't a lot of dialogue to carry the plot. He got the gist of the movie because it was well animated and the characters were defined by their actions even more than their words. I think I liked the first 10-15 minutes of the movie best. I don't think there was a single spoken word, just Wall-E's blips, etc. I've heard that it's being compared to a Charlie Chaplan silent film.

I'll echo what several have already mentioned. Brant has a great perspective on the film, but it's one that I didn't see at all when I watched it. (But now the connection seems so clear!) He makes a great point...

I took my five oldest kids (ages 4-11) and they loved it.

I thought it was charming and beautifully done. I have to admit I never thought of the sex angle, but after reading the link I can't believe I didn't see it before. It's a true picture of tenderness, sacrifice, hope, and protecting life.

I am utterly flabbergasted--that's brilliant. Wow. Thanks for the link!

I just read Brant's analysis. I agree - that's some brilliant insight. I missed it too, but I think he's on to something.

The themes he highlights may be some of the reasons I loved the movie, even though I wasn't sure why.

Just got back from seeing it on a daddy date with my 5-year-old daughter. I had read the linked post before so I kinda went in watching for that theme and I think it's right on. Of course, others see anti-consumerism (I can definitely see that) in it and others see environmentalism in it. Like any good story, I think it's a great story no matter what glass one sees it through.
