"Why do people choose the substitute over God himself? Probably the most important reason is that it obviates accountability to God. We can meet idols on our own terms because they are our own creations. They are safe, predictable, and controllable; they are, in Jeremiah's colorful language, the 'scarecrows in a cornfield' (10:5). They are portable and completely under the user's control. They offer nothing like the threat of a God who thunders from Sinai and whose providence in this world so often appears to us to be incomprehensible and dangerous . . . [People] need face only themselves. That is the appeal of idolatry."

Welcome, Baby Speaks!!

Our friend Jen has had her baby!

Baby Jesse Speaks was born at 3 a.m. on Tuesday, January 16, 2007. He weighed in at 7 lbs 5 oz and was 20 1/4 inches long. He has a little bit of dark brown hair and a perfectly round head since he was born via c-section.
Mother, baby, and Beau-daddy are doing well, by all reports.

What a cutie - he doesn't even have "newborn chicken legs". He's nice and rounded, and making me itch for a newborn.

Congratulations!

Cara- they say the camera adds ten pounds, so that could explain why no chicken legs. Seriously, that is one nice looking baby. But, imagine an entire month longer in the "oven" to bake! Okay ladies, all together now..."Oooouuuccchhhh!"
