"People have fallen into a foolish habit of speaking of orthodoxy as something heavy, humdrum, and safe. There never was anything so perilous or so exciting as orthodoxy."

- G.K. Chesterton
Welcome to the New Thinklings Weblog!

Which (we hope) will be kind of like the "old" Thinklings weblog.

Those of you most invested, or even marginally invested, in the Thinklings community have probably already sensed something was "up." Well, it's going down now.

The original four Thinkling -- Jared, Bill, Eric, and Mark -- have been discussing for a while the idea of trying to "go back" and recover on the blog some of the content and spirit of our original conversations, going back to the pre-blog e-mail days. We have sort of felt bad about disappearing into our solo blog hidey holes, and in some cases, the personality of the blog as it is today has not exactly been conducive to inspiration for writing.

But we have been re-inspired and are committed very much to revitalizing The Thinklings blog. We believe this means changing it, not really to something new, but to something "old." If that makes sense.

We believe these changes will improve your experience in this forum, and we look forward to their only enhancing the reputation of The Thinklings as a thoughtful, peaceful, and edifying stop in the Christian blogosphere.

So what will be different?
A few things, some little, some sort of big.

1. Obviously, as you've already noticed, the banner theme and layout have changed. Thanks to honorary Thinkling (and the best little bro a guy could have) Stroke for working his graphic magic on that one for us.

2. The sidebar will change somewhat. New menu. Our bios have been updated. And so has the "favorite posts" section.
The favorite posts list is now not determined by current top comment-getters. This "top ten" will be picked by us, feature archived posts we would like to highlight, and will be updated whenever we feel like it. :-)

3. The blogroll has been cut back dramatically. If you're a regular around here, you're probably still on there. If not, please us know.

4. Comments on all archived posts are now closed.
We realize that's sort of a controversial change, but we believe it's a good one. (Comments on the archived "favorites" list will remain open, however.)

5. One major reason for these changes is our desire to re-focus the content and "tone" of the posts featured here. In hoping to recapture some of the spirit of the original Thinklings coversations, the content of the posts now will trend more devotional/spiritual and personal. But of course there will still be room for posts on "Lost" and movies and the requisite random pictures of monkeys.

6. Lastly, and probably most significant, our stable of bloggers is decreasing to five: Jared, Bill, Eric, Mark, and Phil.
This means there will no longer be any posts here from the honorary fellows or the other two founding Thinklings (Kenny and Asbell).

We realize this decision has some stepping-on-toes potential. Please know that there is nothing personal behind this decision. We aren't mad at anybody.
The honorary Thinklings -- Quaid, Stroke, Alan, Daniel, Thor -- have pretty much picked up the lengthy slack the rest of us left behind for a very long time (Quaid and Alan, we're looking at you). They are the ones who have pretty much carried the blog content-wise through some otherwise stagnant times. We hope everyone knows we appreciate their efforts very much and are thankful for their keeping the Thinklings blog productive and still one of the most linked to and most highly regarded weblogs in the Christian blogosphere.

We have alerted them to this development in advance, and all who have responded have done so graciously and with understanding, as was expected. We will feature any and all of their solo blogging efforts in our roll and will link to them gladly. They will always have a hallowed spot in the Thinklings "legacy" (hardy har har, right? :-) and a reserved spot in the community they helped pioneer.

Speaking of community . . .
We hope none of this dissuades you from continuing to read and participate in The Thinklings blog. We really do value our readers very much, and we trust these changes will only make your time spent here better.

We now returned to our regularly scheduled blogging. :-)

Comments are open.

If you get a chance, go check out the changes on Thinklings, which is the group blog I contribute to.

It's also the first blog I ever wrote for. Hard to believe we've been going at this for nearly five years.

It's based on Bloo . . .

6. Eric - 01/14/2008 12:08 am CST

Aw we're starting this thing off on the wrong foot. We're using our real names now so we're suppossed to be serious and dour ... right?

7. Eric - 01/14/2008 12:12 am CST

By the way, good job on the geek stuff getting this thing up and running, Bill.

Jared, good job on the introductory post.

Mark, good job on sleeping like a fetus during the midnight launch party.

:gbird:

8. Bill - 01/14/2008 12:15 am CST

Thanks Eric!

And now, g'night. I am punchy.

To sleep, perchance to dream . . .

9. Mark - 01/14/2008 12:24 am CST

I'm definitly not asleep.
I wouldn't miss this!!
Good job Jared and Bill.

Change can be good, but I'm sad about the closing of old posts. I never got to see Quaid's final comments on book 7. Nor will there be any more comments on his austute analysis of the election. Sad.

Coffee in the header.

This is a good thing.

12. Raindream - 01/14/2008 8:01 am CST

Um, hi. I came looking for the Thinklings blog. If you folks know what happened to it and where it is now, let me know so I can relink and keep updated.

:-)

*looking forward to the first real post--oh, what's that about nude TV up there?*

13. Milly - 01/14/2008 9:19 am CST

and the last word is... THE.

I was wondering when it would stop I was drifting in from time to time to find that only three or so of us were playing along. Good choice to stop it before it died a slow and painful death.

Thanks for keeping this MoonPiest on the roll. You boys need a chick who debates Dem in the pile.;-}

14. Milly - 01/14/2008 9:20 am CST

I like the changes. It looks good folks.

15. Jared - 01/14/2008 9:42 am CST

[Biting my lip, holding out my thumb-topped fist:]
David, I feel your pain.

16. jen - 01/14/2008 10:39 am CST

As a long time Thinklings reader, I can say that I missed the old tone a bit. I look forward the new-old Thinklings...

*gjensmile*

17. jen - 01/14/2008 10:40 am CST

Oops, that should be...

18. Lee Anne Millinger - 01/14/2008 11:36 am CST

Yes, guys, looking forward to the new direction of the blog. And love the new look.

19. GL - 01/14/2008 5:49 pm CST

So great to know we'll keep seeing all those posts from Blo. The Chick would have been a great loss.

Hat tip to Alan and Quaid. You two did yeoman's work with white collar erudition and artist's panache.

20. Jared - 01/14/2008 5:55 pm CST

Get out of here with that high-falutin' Harr-varrd jargonizing, Dr. Lucke.

21. ken - 01/15/2008 1:34 pm CST

Perhaps it is by design, but your blog does not play well with Google Reader. When I use Reader on my iPhone I see the feed but every time I go to read a post I get an error. Using Reader in my browser works --- I can read the posts --- but the post titles (which are usually links to the post itself) are not links at all.

Just FYI

ken

22. Bill - 01/15/2008 2:48 pm CST

Thanks Ken. That's not by design ;-) - must be something with the RSS. I'll look at it.

23. salguod - 01/15/2008 10:22 pm CST

Love the new old Thinklings. I am humbled to still be on your much slimmer blog roll.

24. Shrode - 01/17/2008 9:10 am CST

Hey where did the banner picture come from?

Is it coincidence that the one word I can read on the newspaper is "mentors"?

Hmmmm. A reference to the Inklings?

25. Scott - 01/22/2008 6:37 pm CST

Good looking site guys! Nothing wrong with a reset now and then.

26. Scott - 01/22/2008 6:38 pm CST

Also as an early tester of Bloo, I gotta say, it's pretty good looking.

27. Bill - 01/22/2008 7:29 pm CST

Thanks Scott!

It's finally to a pretty solid ready for primetime state.

I haven't upgraded your test blog in forever, but probably will when I release this version in the next few days/week.

Thanks for the kind words

28. Scott - 01/23/2008 7:54 pm CST

S'okay. If you look I haven't posted there in forever.

29. Bill - 01/23/2008 8:27 pm CST

Heh - yeah, I know. That's why I haven't bothered upgrading it :-)

But I probably will anyway, just to bang on the upgrade code a bit.
