"Why do people choose the substitute over God himself? Probably the most important reason is that it obviates accountability to God. We can meet idols on our own terms because they are our own creations. They are safe, predictable, and controllable; they are, in Jeremiah's colorful language, the 'scarecrows in a cornfield' (10:5). They are portable and completely under the user's control. They offer nothing like the threat of a God who thunders from Sinai and whose providence in this world so often appears to us to be incomprehensible and dangerous . . . [People] need face only themselves. That is the appeal of idolatry."

Whew! I'm Heading To The Polls

You Should Be Allowed to Vote
You got 14/15 questions correct.
Generally speaking, you're very well informed.

If you vote this election, you'll know exactly who (and what) you'll be voting for.
You're likely to have strong opinions, and you have the facts to back them up.

I didn't know who the President of France is, I guess . . .

I honestly can't figure out which one I got wrong. Does that mean I can still vote?

4. Andrew - 10/23/2008 9:45 pm CDT

15/15.

5. Wickle - 10/23/2008 11:33 pm CDT

15/15 ... So everyone should do whatever I say, right?

6. Quaid - 10/24/2008 12:19 am CDT

A+ for me, too.

I'm not sure if that's an accurate portrayal of who an informed citizen is. Shouldn't it mention the differences in the candidates' tax plans? What about their stance on immigration or the war?

"Which war is John McCain a veteran of?" The writer of this quiz should not be allowed to vote.

8. Bill - 10/24/2008 11:06 pm CDT

"Nicolas Sarkozy"

That just doesn't sound French, now, does it?
