Who Is Playing For The Half-Time Show?

Ask me if I care.

Well, I guess you don't have to ask now, since that was just an expression.

Pre-game show is on, and there was just some big to-do about "The Who" having done everything in 40 years of music...except this. And oh, what a challenge it was condensing 40 years of music into 12 minutes... blah, blah, blah.

Then I heard the CSI theme song and decided that will probably be the most well-known song.

The halftime show is usually a nuisance, but I think it's been better since the wardrobe malfunction. U2 (They played in 2002, which I think preceded Nipplegate, but oh well), Paul McCartney, Prince, Bruce Springsteen all put on decent, if somewhat forgettable, shows. My attitude toward the halftime show depends on who's playing. With the artists mentioned above, I was excited. A little extra treat, just for me. When I hear The Who, Tom Petty, or The Rolling Stones are playing, I shrug my shoulders and say, "eh." But, I don't have any beef with the Halftime Show. It's part of the spectacle. The Super Bowl probably doesn't need any more spectacle, since it is THE High Holy Day of American sports, but I don't really fault anyone for it.

Friends, food, and football. Should be a good game, and a fun night.

This is the first year I haven't looked forward to the halftime show in a while - just never a big Who fan.......I remember feeling the same way when Aerosmith did it - snoozeville.

But U2 was great post 9/11, and Tom Petty, McCartney, and The Boss all were really good in this venue.

After the Stones played halftime (2004?) Jim Rome said, "Of course we'd all love for U2 to play every Superbowl halftime show, but that's not going to happen."

Shrode, are you just a little peeved because Metallica has never had the honor? :-)

A little "Enter Sandman" at the Superbowl would be pretty cool.

I hear you, nhe.

By the way, I'm liking The Who.

I liked The Who okay. Good songs, good band. A little past their sell date.

Sometimes the show is good in theory but not in execution. I was stoked for Springsteen (last year?) but didn't think he did very well.

U2 was my most recent fave.

The Who set the bar pretty low. Townsend couldn't remember the words to his background vocal. And then had a wardrobe malfunction with his belly hanging out. For God sake put on an undershirt!

My wife and I saw a great performance of the Who's Tommy, the rock opera. Since then I've been something of a fan - not a huge fan but enough so that I enjoyed the halftime show, even though they were noticeably past their prime.

The half-time show production was off the charts - looked cool on TV. Townsend and Daultry both left a lot to be desired vocally - the hard living has taken it's toll.

The best thing about the half-time show was the drummer doing his best Keith Moon imitation.....very quirky, but very good.

Who should be there next year? If you had to pick someone who has not yet done a halftime show, who would you pick?

I think a Jay-Z/Beyonce halftime show would look pretty stellar. (They haven't done it before, have they?)

i thought daltry and townshend were excellent in what they pulled off. great song selection and a top-notch performance. baba o'riley could have been written today. nothing about that performance was past it's "due date" for me. what's with the cynicism around here?

12. nhe - 02/08/2010 9:03 am CST

damien......I thought it was good too, but those two can't hit the notes anymore......the "good" vocals you heard were from the background singers - the new younger guys.

13. Bill - 02/08/2010 9:40 am CST

And, just to be fair, those guys are in their mid sixties.

I think all music at the SB should be live. Was U2s pre-recorded too?

I really liked the Who's performance. Like I said in another place these guys have been at it for forty years. They have lived hard fast lives. It could easily be said, and I would agree, that Daultry lost his voice years ago. I would bet the same for Townsend. All the songs were brought down into a range they could deal with. The whole point of Rock and Roll when they started was to be raw and rough not to be overproduced into something that would be nice to listen to. Townsend did great guitar work. I thought the vocals were okay and hearing the entire crowd sing some of the lyrics was awesome!

Let's not forget the last note of the Star Spangled Banner that was sung and sustained quite flat.

I don't know Bill - on the R&R H of F concert, 70+ Sam Moore (of "Soul Man" fame) was blasting out Soul Man like he was in his 20's......I saw the Moody Blues in concert in their 60s, and they could still hit the notes too.......I've seen a lot that couldn't (Phillip Bailey of EWF comes to mind, and he's younger).....I think it comes and goes at different times for folks.

16. Jared - 02/09/2010 5:59 am CST

Fairly certain that The Who's drummer is Zack Starr, Ringo's son.

17. Brian in Fresno - 02/09/2010 11:56 am CST

Yeah, the drummer was Zack Starkey, Ringo's oldest son. He has toured with the Who for about five years.

I know everyone wants to be charitable to the elderly, and The Who has always been one of my favorite bands, but let's face it -- they were awful. I've seen several dozen Who performances on TV and video, and it really is retirement time. The NFL could really do the world a favor if it started looking at artists like Josh Groban, Celtic Woman, or Wynton Marsalis.
