"Why do people choose the substitute over God himself? Probably the most important reason is that it obviates accountability to God. We can meet idols on our own terms because they are our own creations. They are safe, predictable, and controllable; they are, in Jeremiah's colorful language, the 'scarecrows in a cornfield' (10:5). They are portable and completely under the user's control. They offer nothing like the threat of a God who thunders from Sinai and whose providence in this world so often appears to us to be incomprehensible and dangerous . . . [People] need face only themselves. That is the appeal of idolatry."

Congratulations, Jared. If it is even half as good as your other writings, it'll be an awesome book.

Congrats again!

I saw The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything this afternoon--great fun. Maybe a few too many serious moments, but it was all very silly, not at all boring, pretty good music, and strong story. That cute rhubarb they have doesn't get enough face time, but than that, it's great. :-)

"It's not magic. It's Radio Shack." Heh, heh.

Heh. Yeah, it was pretty durn good.

Fun story:
We actually got to see it last year when Big Idea previewed it for some industry types at a local theater. 'Cause of my wife's job, she got the invite and they told her Grace and I could tag along.

Grace was the only kid there. A theater full of Christian publishing businesspeople and me and Grace. It was great.
And Larry himself, Mike Nawrocki, who directed the film, sat right in front of us. He did his Larry voice for Grace and she loved it.

On the part where the pirates are in teh rowboat and have to get through the rapidly closing clapping rocks and just narrowly make it, there was silence in the theater until Grace raised her hands and shouted in triumph, "They made it!" The whole place erupted in laughter and applause.

Nawrocki said that moment made the whole thing worth it. :-)

Jared,

I've already read the intro and chapter 1. Great stuff!

Thanks, man. :-)

We had a similar moment in reverse in our theater. Archibald says something close to "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the last, sad minutes of our lives." One adult far off to my left laughed pretty hard at that.
