Was this the one that started it all? I can't remember if this was the first digital short or not, but it certainly pushed the short into an SNL mainstay.

Now there sometimes are two shorts in a show. Samberg and friends can thank these videos for their popularity. He isn't really too funny at any other time in the show. Every once in a while he'll do something good, but outside of the shorts, I'm not sure he's SNL worthy. With the shorts? SNL has a renewed relevance.

Certainly, the Digital Short is part of their most recent renaissance.

HALP!!!!!

First of all, I know that if you have to have a joke explained to you...you don't get it. And it kind of ruins the joke. But please help me. Why is that funny? I mean, what's the point. Is it two geeks rapping about something that doesn't fit the style of music, so it's the incongruity that's funny? Is there something else I'm not getting?

Sorry! (I actually liked the song. :)

But can someone please explain the point/punch line of this?

Second, Quaid what on earth are you talking about? What is a "short"? I don't watch SNL but haven't they always done shorts? I at least remember their fake commercials going at least as far back as the mid-80's. What do you mean "Digital Shorts"? Shorts that they can play on HULU and post on blogs?

Shrode,

Are you saying you don't see the humor in "You can call us Aaron Burr for the way we're droppin' Hamiltons"? **

Yes, it's the incongruity of two regular guys doing an agressive rap that is about going to see the Narnia movie, eating cupcakes, going to the deli, debating the best online map service, and, of course, "Girl acted like she never seen a ten befo'"

SNL humor doesn't appeal to everyone. I only get it about 30% of the time, but I thought this was hilarious.

** This is especially funny because it's true. Burr killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel.

Amazing job on the chorus --> it's the chronic - what? - cles of narnia :)

Pibb and red vines = crazy delicious! LOL

I think Sanmberg is definitely SNL worthy - for the shorts alone........and don't forget "Mark Wahlberg talks to the animals"

I think Samberg has a real gift with the Digital Shorts. When this video first aired (2005 I think), it was a Saturday night and I couldn't get to sleep. As soon as I saw this, I was like, if Saturday Night Live can tap into more of this type of thing, they will be back on map.

However, I will say that sometimes Samberg and crew go over the edge into serious raunch and disgusting content, which is unfortunate. Some of his other shorts could be classics if he didn't always feel the urge to put in all of the crude and offensive stuff.

At least in "Lazy Sunday" (the one you posted) Samberg masked the potential "offense". (ie, the drug references).
Still love this video.

I like Samberg as Mark Wahlberg and as The Blizzard Man.

I'm not a regular watcher of the show, but for the funniest three minutes on TV I've seen in years, check out this clip of an episode of The Big Bang Theory.

Be sure to read the background note at the right for the setup to the clip.

I love this rap

10. brandontmilan - 10/23/2009 1:47 pm CDT

Its quite a bit more profane than this, but one of the best recent ones is "I'm on a Boat"

Other than that, Lazer Cats is somewhat funny, but I especially liked the one that included them using Steve Martin as a front to convince Lorne into letting them show the new episode...

Well - the bulk of SNL is sketches, live skits that last about 5 - 10 minutes. The only non-live things they do are the commercials, and they'll do a short every once in a while. From the 80s, I remember Mr. Bill (the play-dough guy) and there was this one short about male synchronized swimming starring Martin Short, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer. (This is one of my favorite SNL moments of all time)

The Digital Short came along a few years ago. All of them are done by three guys (including Samberg) who came from LA together to SNL. They write, produce, etc. the shorts while many of the hosts and SNL players act in them. The Digital Shorts have a feel that's aimed at a younger generation and they are all filmed digitally, as opposed to analog.

HALP!
This was mentioned above, but to be more explicit, "chronic" is slang for marijuana. Juxtaposing pot into the title of a children's film is pretty humorous on a certain level. Not to mention that cocking and shooting shotgun sound effects are sprinkled throughout the video as if they were gangsta rappers.

Also, the idea that they're rapping about a pretty mundane event is also pretty funny. They're rapping about going to see a movie and seem pretty passionate about it while mixing in obscure cultural references (GoogleMaps, Rachel McAdams, Ghost, etc.). It's kind of similar to how Weird Al raps about mowing his yard in "White and Nerdy". Funny.

"Mr. Pibb and Red Vines equals crazy delicious"

This was mentioned above, but to be more explicit, "chronic" is slang for marijuana.

I didn't know that.

Makes me like the video a lot less . . .

13. Enkurio - 10/23/2009 6:45 pm CDT

Yuk! I didn't know chronic was slang for pot. It is not so funny anymore.

14. Jared - 10/23/2009 9:05 pm CDT

Well, I knew "chronic" was slang for pot BUT I didn't think they were splitting up "chronicles" to make that reference. It didn't even occur to me.

Now that you mention it, I'm still not convinced. I think they're just being stupid.

15. Jared - 10/23/2009 9:07 pm CDT

Okay, just watched it again. At one point they do say "Pass that chronic -- what?! -- cles of Narnia," so maybe the chronic thing is intentional.

But I still think it's funny. :-)

16. Bill - 10/23/2009 9:50 pm CDT

I think it's funny too. And you've just explained why they say "pass that chronic" - I never understood what that meant.

I still think it's funny. But I like it less.

17. Shrode - 10/24/2009 2:43 pm CDT

Now that I know that "chronic" is a drug reference, I like the title of this post a lot less too...and Bill's parenthetical statement appearing just before the video takes on a slightly different meaning as well...

Way to go Bill. Three drug references in one post. That's got to be some kind of record. I don't know which emoticon is more appropriate now.

:gyikes: OR :gstogie:

Stick like duct tape.
